Just recently, we reported the passage of the Liaoning Carrier Strike Group of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) through the Basilan Strait, near Zamboanga City, as it passed through the southern part of the country.
The full picture was unveiled, with both the Philippine Navy and the Philippine Coast Guard actively monitoring the carrier strike group, where the former deployed the BRP Diego Silang (FFG7) frigate first; it was then accompanied by BRP Emilio Jacinto under the Western Mindanao Naval Command, then the BRP Sarangani of the Philippine Coast Guard when it passed near Sarangani province, and then the BRP Artemio Ricarte when it passed into the jurisdiction of the Eastern Mindanao Naval Command.
While the entire passage can be dismissed as basically an innocent passage under international law, plus the area near Basilan Strait being a valid maritime route under the Archipelagic Sea Lanes Law or RA 12065, the appearance of the Liaoning Carrier Strike Group is still a cause of concern worth monitoring at that time, given the increased tensions between the Philippines and China as of late.

A video has emerged documenting the moment when a Russian unmanned surface vessel (USV) approached and targeted the Liberia-flagged, Greek-owned CONTSHIP JET container ship off the coast of Bulgaria on October 28, 2026.
According to available information, the vessel was struck by at least three naval drones and subsequently sunk in the Black Sea waters. All 18 of its crew-members were rescued unharmed.
In the last few weeks, Russia has escalated its strike campaign against commercial shipping in the Black Sea theater. Multiple ships were struck in the exclusive economic zones and, in some cases, territorial waters of NATO members - Romania and Bulgaria.

Russia’s new Geran-5 drones can reach speeds of up to 1,000 km/h, and AI-equipped drones will be able to find and attack trains, warehouses and vehicles on their own, according to Ukrainian military communications expert Serhiy “Flash” Beskrestnov.
He warned that Russia could launch “a thousand drones” that search for and strike targets autonomously, with no operator involved.

NCSIST said on Oct. 23 that it found a suspected PRC-made communication signal filter during an inspection of components for the air-launched Hsiung Feng III missile it is developing for the Indigenous Defense Fighter.
The institute said the part had not been installed, contains no transmitting or embedded electronic components, and that it has asked the supplier for an explanation. NCSIST test-fired the missile near Jiupeng Military Base in July and must cut its weight below 1,000 kg for IDF carriage.

Taiwan's National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu said the PLA is sending groups of vessels, including the PLAN carrier Liaoning (16), to exercise east of the First Island Chain.
TSM counts 34 PLAN and 19 CCG/MSA/RSB vessels as of Oct. 28, including three theater command far-seas formations. The Liaoning transited between Okinawa and Miyako on Oct. 14 with destroyers Anshan (103), Wuxi (104) and Huainan (123), per Japan's Joint Staff.

The Ethiopian Air Force has received not only twelve Sukhoi Su-35SE multirole fighters but also an Ilyushin Il-78M-90 heavy tanker aircraft to support them. This tanker can significantly extend the fighters’ operational range, enabling them to conduct deep-strike missions across Africa, with sufficient range to reach anywhere in Egypt.
One unfortunate aspect of this sale to Ethiopia, from Egypt’s perspective, is that these Su-35SEs were originally ordered by Egypt, which had to cancel the order under pressure from the United States.
Algeria also purchased some of the ex-Egyptian Su-35SEs after Iran cancelled its plans to buy them.
