I worked for many years in the Joburg CBD and I’ve been to many of the worst buildings you can imagine. The reality is that the City does not have a serious strategy to deal with housing in the CBD. Vigilante raids by politicians look exciting but won’t solve any problem.

I remember reading that part of the reason women pushed for public restrooms was because a lack of them meant that women couldn’t be out for long & was an effective way of keeping women out of public spaces. I think about that a lot now when it comes to trans people
