Your AI agent isn't yours if it needs someone else's server. In 2019, I read an essay about local-first software that I never got over. Seven years later, I built Osaurus around it. Here's why the thing that knows how you think should belong to you.

Local-first is a choice about who software answers to. @iroh_n0 chose people. Dial by key. Connect offline. Run anywhere. Some things are built to be rented. Some are built to be kept.

Venice AI, Experiential Labs, Maple AI, thank you for being transparent. No gating the models, no collecting emails. I release these models for free, often with @jordanschenck also pitching in thousands of dollars to provide compute. It’s sad that we’ve reached a point where simply asking for public acknowledgment of your work is even necessary. I’ve seen far more instances of people not receiving proper credit than instances where they do. If you’re one of those people who aren’t properly crediting the people behind open source work, please don’t ruin it for the rest of those who do. And I don’t mean just in my case, but in general. Open source is how EVERYONE benefits, and undermining the trust within that ecosystem is detrimental to us all. Stealing work and refusing to give credit makes you no different from OpenAI or Anthropic.

The most personal computer is the one that thinks only for you. Local AI. Yours to keep, yours to shape, yours alone.

It’s now public! No invite required. Try it out and tell me what you think! Pairs great with @NVIDIARTXSpark devices like the @surface Laptop Ultra!
Privacy isn’t extinct. Osaurus is now on Windows.

Since day one, the most common question has been “when Windows?” Today. Public beta is open. Same idea as on the Mac: your AI, on your machine.

Privacy is a fundamental human right. Not because you have something to hide. Because you deserve a choice.

Here's a snippet of the @OsaurusAI iOS app that I'm currently working on. It's being built entirely in UIKit with no traces of SwiftUI for maximum performance and backward compatibility. Excited to bring the Mac app to mobile with Day 0 support for the new iPhone Duo!

Osaurus is coming to your pocket. Native UIKit. Day 0 on iPhone Duo.

Building on the frontier. Local models. Your Mac. Electrons you already paid for.
Thanks for calling local models the frontier. Intelligence per watt is improving fast on its own curve. Soon local models will match what feels like frontier today. When that happens, there’s an enormous opportunity: tools, infrastructure, and support for people building businesses on the electrons they already paid for. Labs like @ornith_ , @Alibaba_Qwen , @liquidai , and @nanbeige are already pushing this forward with almost no revenue model. We’re building the infrastructure for it. Reach out if you want to learn more.

Today, a16z Crypto is becoming a16z Frontier. Since joining a16z in 2013, @cdixon has focused on technologies that look futuristic well before they reach the mainstream. Those themes led to investments in Oculus, Skydio, Zipline, Coinbase, Solana, and Uniswap. Frontier expands that mandate beyond crypto to back "outer planet" founders who are building new technologies and creating markets that may take years to develop. Chris joins @pmarca, @bhorowitz, and @eriktorenberg to discuss why crypto has become part of the broader tech landscape, why Frontier fills a hole in the firm's architecture, and why they'd rather be too early than too late. They also get into why the gap between AI-native startups and incumbents is the widest Marc has ever seen, how AI could pull forward 20 years of frontier technology, why stablecoins may become the way AI agents pay each other, how AI is breaking the internet's business model, and why today's 18-year-olds are about to become superhumans. 0:50 Introducing a16z Frontier 2:49 Smartphone parts to drones and VR 4:47 Backing the "outer planets" 7:11 Good ideas that look like bad ideas 10:43 The JP Morgan photo in Marc's office 15:13 Good tech ideas eventually work 16:53 AI may pull tech 20 years forward 18:18 The widest AI gap Marc's ever seen 22:06 Workers adopt AI before companies do 26:32 Old use cases vs. AI-native ones 30:08 Beyond "product manager brain" 34:45 AI can reverse engineer any hardware 38:23 The case for open source AI 46:36 How AI breaks the internet's model 49:11 VR, homebrew hacking, multiplayer AI 54:00 If you're 18, study "modern alchemy" YouTube: youtu.be/-9XQMHhpypc Not an offer or solicitation. I don't think people realize how capable Local AI has become. People compare them to the frontier models and conclude they are useless. That's like comparing a Honda Accord to a Bugatti Chiron. Not everyone needs a hypercar, and not every task needs a frontier model.

Local-first was never just about ownership. It's resilience. It's decentralization. It's control back in your hands. What future do you want to build?

NVIDIA spent its keynote selling AI factories. A Mac read the whole thing and built a webpage about it. The model found itself in the coverage. Flint 40B. Running locally. Native Swift. No Electron.
Introducing Flint, @Recursive_SI’s first model: a fast local coding model built with our automated research system, the Eureka Machine. • Best-in-class fast local coding • Up to 2x faster than comparable models: 125+ tokens/sec on a MacBook Pro, 150+ on RTX Spark • Built from scratch in under 4 months Private, unmetered intelligence on your own machine. Open weights available now on @huggingface, run it locally on your favorite framework or try it for free on @opencode or @pidotdev.

The page isn’t the impressive part. Halfway through, the shell failed. It didn’t stop or ask for help. It switched to file tools and finished the job. 2.5B active params did that.

The ideal software is built for the user, not the builder. That means caring about what matters to them. To me, that's software you own. Not software I rent to you. Building this for you.

Being local first means no server to rotate 🤷‍♂️

How many times do we have to give up our data before we learn that policy alone isn’t privacy? If you want to protect your data, keep it local.
A quick explainer for everyone else. >half the internet runs on PHP >a big security bug dropped today >basically hackers can take over websites just by sending one special request (crazy!) >no password needed >patches are out >lots of sites are going down for emergency updates >if you have a website, tell your host to update PHP right now >if you don’t, just enjoy the random maintenance pages for now
