Why only Bala Kanda? Large parts of the Valmiki Ramayan published today, especially sourced from the Asiatic Society, are blatantly fake.
You read authentic Ramayan and see a clean arc: a human Ram, perfect in action, facing real challenges, rising through Dharma.
Then suddenly miracles, irrelevant dialogues, tonal shifts inserted like speed breakers.
They break narrative flow, dilute character strength, and scream interpolation.
These tamperings have:
- No authentic manuscript lineage
- nLanguage from later classical Sanskrit, not Valmiki era
- No narrative value. Remove them, story flows smoother
Examples:
1. Putreshti Yajna in Bala Kanda
2. Ram eating meat in forest, despite also saying he only ate fruits and shoots.
3. Sita-Ravan conversations pre-abduction
4. Agni Pariksha of Sita
5. Overextended grief of Ram post Sita's abduction
6. Exaggerated description of leap of Hanuman
7. Elaborate poetic build-up before meeting Ravan
8. Dozens of tone-breaking verses scattered throughout
How to spot fakes (even without Sanskrit):
1. Does not affect the storyline. Remove, and flow remains. Often gets better
2. Sudden style or speed change - breaks immersion
3. Adds anti-Vedic, absurd, or vulgar insertions
4. Feels emotionally or philosophically out-of-place
Conclusion:
What you call Ramayan today is a mosaic of authentic and smuggled verses. The real Valmiki Ramayan is fast, sharp, Dharma-rooted.
The rest?
Insertions meant to derail the Vedic hero, the greatest human role model.
