We are actively diagnosing a genetically milder population today than we did twenty years ago.

Self-care advice is well-meaning, and some of it is genuinely useful. But I think it misses the most important thing. What the research on burnout in helping professionals consistently shows is that the biggest driver isn't the volume of the work. It's the effort to suppress and manage the difficult feelings that come with it, the vicarious grief, the frustration, the uncertainty, the times when you don't know if you're helping. The suppression is exhausting. What helps more than anything else is developing the capacity to feel those things without needing to resolve them first, and staying connected to why you chose this work in the first place.
