The work to support Ukraine is far from over.
At the 2023 Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting, Secretary Clinton announced the launch of the CGI Ukraine Action Network to sustain international attention and action.
Since then, the network has grown fivefold, consistently bringing together more than 75 organizations working to support Ukrainians through humanitarian aid, trauma recovery, health care, education and long-term rebuilding, resulting in more than 20 Commitments to Action from the Network.
From helping children continue their education to expanding mental health support for people affected by war, CGI partners are addressing urgent needs while laying the groundwork for Ukraine’s recovery.

On #WorldSustainabilityDay, we celebrated ADB headquarters’ renewal of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum, the highest level of green building certification.
Achieving Platinum in 2023 and renewing it this year shows that reaching the highest standard takes ambition, while sustaining it takes discipline. I thank our colleagues whose daily efforts make sustainability part of how we work.
I was also honored to continue my predecessors’ tradition of planting a tree on our headquarters grounds. I chose a kamagong, or Philippine ebony, an endangered native tree that reminds us of our responsibility to future generations.
As we promote sustainability across Asia and the Pacific, we must hold ourselves to the same standard. Credibility is built at home.

Rising geopolitical conflict across the world is driving countries in multiple regions to establish new bilateral currency swap facilities. In the Middle East, the UAE has extended a new local-currency (dirham) swap line to Bahrain—whose debt has surged owing to a drop in oil revenues from Iran’s attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. Russia—financially constrained by sharply curtailed access to the SWIFT global cross-border payments system since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine—has established a new swap line with Kazakhstan.
Since the financial crisis of 2007, central banks around the world have entered into a multitude of bilateral currency swap agreements with one another. These agreements allow a central bank in one country to exchange currency, usually its domestic currency, for a certain amount of foreign currency. The recipient central bank can then lend this foreign currency on to its domestic banks, on its own terms and at its own risk.
