Additionally, Government distributed 24.4 million coffee seedlings to 49,695 beneficiaries in Northern Uganda, while 347,826 bags of fertiliser are being distributed to strategic crop farmers. โ‡๏ธ Livestock sub-sector Government has availed farmers with 5.1 million poultry chicks, 28,139 piglets, 18,659 improved meat goats and 14,972 dairy and beef breeding animals. The sector is benefiting from establishment of two liquid nitrogen plants, expanded breeding facilities and a new animal breeding centre in Bukedea. โ‡๏ธ Animal Health Ugandaโ€™s anti-tick vaccine facility at Nakyesasa can produce 3โ€“6 million doses monthly, with 5 million doses in stock. Government has procured 44.8 million FMD vaccine doses, while 4 million cattle have been sprayed against tsetse flies. โ‡๏ธ Agricultural Mechanization Since 2018, Government has deployed 1,080 tractors and 1,350 power tillers. A further 10,000 tractors are targeted over five years. More than 4 million hand hoes have been distributed across 50 districts, with another 990,000 under procurement. โ‡๏ธ Water for Agricultural Production Ten large- and medium-scale irrigation schemes have added 7,203 hectares to formal irrigation. More than 6,657 solar-powered small and medium irrigation schemes have been established across 135 districts, adding 5,000 hectares under irrigation. The proposed National Irrigation Development Project aims to expand access countrywide. โ‡๏ธ Farm-to-market infrastructure Government has addressed about 2,110 km of farm-road bottlenecks, including 345 bridges/culverts and 59 swamp crossings. Another 642.8 km of road bottlenecks in 69 districts are under procurement evaluation. Additionally, 358 farmer organizations have gained storage and processing infrastructure, adding about 82,000 tonnes of storage capacity. โ‡๏ธ Dairy sub-sector Uganda now has 748 milk collection centres, 12 bulk milk collection centres and 200 registered milk tankers. Milk-processing facilities increased from 120 in 2019 to 170 in 2025. โ‡๏ธ Fisheries sub-sector: More than 5 million fingerlings were used to restock Lakes Mulehe and Chahafi. Government has mapped 140 fish breeding areas to protect spawning grounds and strengthen sustainable fisheries. โ‡๏ธ Oil palm Oil palm development is expanding across several hubs, supported by 567 km of farm roads. Current interventions in this sub-sector are aimed at addressing Uganda's vegetable-oil supply gap of 370,000 tonnes on annual average. โ‡๏ธ Agricultural extension remains a priority Despite the gains, funding constraints, inadequate agricultural extension staffing remains a critical issue, with efforts underway to improve staffing (Only 4,310 of 9,667 approved extension worker positions are filled) Hon. Tumwebaze also reassured the public of the commitment of government to ensure that gaps are addressed, in collaboration with local governments and line Ministries. #AgricultureUG @DESIREtheFARMER @PS_MAAIF @Charlie_Kemi ๐Ÿ“ธ @Parliament_Ug

Training champions of Climate-Smart Agriculture: Earlier today, a five-day Training of Trainers (ToT) for the Crop Value Chain of the Uganda Climate Smart Agriculture Transformation Project (UCSATP) was concluded with the awarding of certificates to participants. The training equipped participants with practical knowledge and skills in Farmer Field School (FFS) approaches, including the Agro-Ecosystem Analysis (AESA), to strengthen farmer learning and promote the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices. Through this capacity-building initiative, UCSATP continues to strengthen agricultural extension and knowledge-sharing, empowering trained participants to transfer the skills acquired to farming communities and contribute to increased agricultural productivity, resilience and market access. The training was held at the @Makerere Agricultural Research Institute, Kabanyolo. #MAAIF_UCSATP #AgricultureUG @FrankTumwebazek @DESIREtheFARMER

๐Ÿ“ข On Hon. Frank Tumwebaze's call to district leaders regarding use of local radio stations. "Today, many radio stations have programs on Agriculture and also provide airtime for government, for educating and informing our people. You should work with them to mobilize more people towards commercial Agriculture," - Hon. @FrankTumwebazek to district leaders. โ‡๏ธ How Government works with local radio stations While Government and partners have promotional partnerships with radio stations, the Uganda Communications Commission (@UCC_Official ) Act, under Licensing Condition No. 5 also legally mandates all licensed radio and television stations to allocate a minimum of one (1) hour of free airtime every week to the Government for public education on national policies, programmes, and services. This arrangement is followed up by @MoICT_Ug through the Government Public Education Airtime Programme and was designed to enhance access to information on government initiatives and service delivery by citizens. At district level, the Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) support this arrangement by linking Government officials to the Radio stations. During the meeting, the Minister rallied extension officers, production and marketing officers and Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs) to work with RDCs to get the best impact on agricultural development that radio stations can offer. @FrankTumwebazek @DESIREtheFARMER #AgricultureUG

I have this morning addressed district leaders( Elected and Techenical) from the whole of Uganda. We are discussing and receiving feedback from them on government priorities for the sector. I have tasked the leaders to champion extension services and whip their staff sleeping on job. Priority must be given to carrying out Farmer outreach visits and farmer education talks on radios. Our farmers are always willing to learn. Over the next two days, follow-up discussions will concentrate on receiving & reviewing data from the district leaders on water for agricultural production needs, status of extension services and FMD vaccination coverage.

The following are excerpts from the Minister's statement on each of the key areas: โ‡๏ธ On Irrigation development: The proportion of land under irrigation in Uganda remains below 2%, compared to approximately 3.5โ€“4% in Sub-Saharan Africa and about 28% in Northern Africa. The question we must therefore ask ourselves is: Why has irrigation coverage remained so low in Uganda? As you all know, for a long time Uganda has enjoyed a relatively favourable and predictable climate, with annual rainfall of at least about 1,250 mm in most parts of the country. This has generally been sufficient to support two planting seasons in much of the country, except in some traditionally water-stressed areas, particularly parts of the cattle corridor. As such, faced with many competing priorities, Government did not find it urgent to invest substantially in the development of irrigation infrastructure. However, with support from a number of loan-funded projects, both the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) and the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) have developed a number of irrigation schemes and water-for-agricultural-production facilities. The challenge, however, is that some of these facilities are not yet fully functional, particularly in terms of last-mile conveyance of water to farms and livestock watering points. During this engagement, you will provide us with the status of these facilities in your respective districts. Now, however, our circumstances are changing. With increasingly erratic weather patterns, agricultural production and productivity are becoming more vulnerable and less predictable. We can no longer rely solely on rainfall to sustain agricultural production. I am pleased to report that H.E. the President has prioritized mass irrigation development as a key policy and strategic intervention to stabilize agricultural production and increase productivity. #AgricultureUG #MAAIFMeetsDistricts
