If you'd like the better-is-better version of tokenization in Chia we have the CAT standard which is also UTXO based but also allows transactions to verify on-chain that they're talking to a real token instead of requiring access to a full node.
Chia's been taking the Bitcoin approach to everything, and in this case even the backported version is much more true to the Bitcoin approach than what's been on Bitcoin already.
New terrible idea just dropped: Runes.
A worse-is-better fungible token protocol for Bitcoin.
