The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was the most peaceful and human empire in the history of mankind.
No colonies. No transatlantic slave trade. No Inquisition. While Spain burned people alive and Britain shipped Africans across the ocean, the Commonwealth gave religious freedom to Jews, Protestants, and Orthodox Christians when the rest of Europe was drowning in blood.
The Warsaw Confederation of fifteen seventy-three was the first law in European history guaranteeing freedom of conscience.
It elected its kings. It had the largest parliament on the continent.
It was the first to abolish capital punishment for witchcraft in sixteen forty-eight — a century before most of Europe.
And unlike every other empire, it never fought a war of aggression. No invasions for conquest. Every conflict it entered was defensive.
It also developed Ukraine and Belarus economically — turned the wild steppe into farmland, built cities, trade routes, and institutions where before there was nothing but frontier.
It wasn't perfect. Nothing human is. But compared to every empire that came before or after, it was the closest thing mankind has ever built to a civilization that chose tolerance over terror.

Happy Birthday, Dad! He may not be Sean Connery or the Dos Equis guy, but he escaped socialism and is the coolest guy I know. Vilnius, Lithuania, produces legends. Love you, tevelis!

You can take the Europeans out of Europe, but not our love of public transport. Thanks for the ride, @MARTAtransit! Atlanta, we'll miss you (but your traffic, not so much). 🚄🍑

Today, I observed “Thunder of Perkūnas 26”, the largest military exercise of the year.
During the exercise, the Lithuanian Armed Forces train to carry out tasks set out in national defense plans in coordination with NATO forces, the Ministry of the Interior, and other agencies.
Joint operations with NATO are a particularly important element of the exercise. We are not alone — the deployment of U.S. and German military units in Lithuania is clear evidence of that.
These joint exercises further strengthen our readiness to defend ourselves together, if necessary, and to protect the freedom and values we all share.

We deeply value the U.S. decision to deploy troops to Lithuania.
This is a critically important guarantee of deterrence and security.
Until now, U.S. troops in Lithuania have been on a rotational basis - with decisions on extensions being made regularly.
During my meeting with U.S. Special Envoy J. Coale, I proposed that the U.S. could establish a permanent base in Lithuania. I am glad that this idea is being taken seriously.
@potus only needs to make a political decision and #Lithuania is ready to cover the associated costs.
Camp Herkus awaits you!

I asked POTUS if he would consider establishing a US base in Lithuania.
Trump: We will certainly look at it. I know so many people in Lithuania. They are great people

Thank you, Mr. President! The United States can always count on Lithuania as a steadfast friend.
Lithuania deeply values the 🇺🇸 presence. We are proud to be super-hosts to rotational troops and would offer no less in welcoming a permanent 🇺🇸 base.
And thanks to @a_semelis! 🇱🇹🎥
