What is the Spanish term for a mature maize plant that lacks ear shoots? (Barren in English) Mexican Spanish is most immediately relevant, but I'm also interested in other dialects!

Bonny and i don't expect the bike lanes to be plowed first, or even second...this is Iowa after all. But, it's two days after the snowfall and the drifts are getting deep. @BunchBikes @cityofames
