ALT Map showing Capsicum sampling sites in Oaxaca, Mexico. (A, B) Wild, semiwild and landraces (cultivated) plants of Capsicum annuum were collected, along with some individuals of Capsicum frutescens and Capsicum chinense species. For a given locality sometimes C. annuum plants of all three domestication levels and/or the other species were sampled. Photos show transverse section of representative fruits of each C. annuum landrace sampled in Oaxaca: (C) Achilito, (D) Huacle, (E) Chilcostle Rojo, (F) De Árbol (Cañada region); (G) de Agua, (H) Taviche, (I) Nanchita (J), Paradito (Central Valleys); (K) Costeño Rojo, (L) Costeño Amarillo, (M) Gui'ña dani, (N) Tusta, and (O) Mirasol landraces (coastal region). Also, (P) Piquín growing semiwild in some Oaxaca localities and (Q) Wild fruits (C. annuum var. glabriusculum). Chile pepper photos by Cristina Alonso.

ALT Types of Plant Breeding Paper A 3 by 4 grid of 12 different cartoon scientific paper title pages with various titles: Drones can take photos that tell us stuff about plants. Our new model for genomic selection increases accuracy by 0.02. We report some novel QTL for a somewhat interesting trait. How about we reuse these old datasets for this new analysis? This experiment had been done in wheat, so we did the same experiment in rice and spinach. We characterized genetic variation in bad germplasm. Growing real plants is too hard so I ran a simulation in Fortran instead. Genomic selection works for this trait in this crop grown in these environments. We learned that we can use machine learning. This newest ‘omics thingamajig will revolutionize plant breeding. It used to be called stress tolerance but funding agencies like “resilience to climate change”. Transgenics is so 90’s; we now have CRISPR.
