I’d argue the opposite: it was very well known and understood! There are many instances in the suttas that show the Buddha deliberately assessing people’s readiness before teaching them about the Four Noble Truths. It’s not so much that ancient Buddhists didn’t know but more that modern people “know too much” by having access to source materials without having a teacher/monk frame it for them properly (due to mass print media and the internet).

Shinto as we know it was separated from Buddhism forcefully (神仏分離) by the meiji government in like 1868. Before that it was always a syncretism between buddhism and the kami for more than thousand years (神仏習合). It still is practiced together nowadays.
