As Trump hosts Xi today, human rights are unlikely to be on the agenda. The press will speculate on what deals they will make, when the focus should be what kind of world they will make, and whether other govts & people will stand up to them *both* in defense of basic rights.
US President Donald Trump is welcoming Chinese leader Xi Jinping to Washington, DC. Both leaders’ attacks on human rights have a global impact. Human rights are non-negotiable. World leaders should reject Xi and Trump’s attack on human rights.

Anti-work activist Xiao Wu has reportedly been released on bail, @CHRDnet says, citing his lawyer. Good news as it’s unusual for detainees to be given bail; but Xiao Wu should’ve never been detained in the first place for writing about workers rights.
Update: Anti-work activist Xiao Wu's confirmed detained for "creating a disturbance". He's documented the plight of workers facing automation and economic downturn, & advocates for a rethink of work in general.

A booked LGBT event venue becomes suddenly and implausibly “unavailable” only because the CCP is against LGBT rights — and any large social gathering it cannot co-opt or control outright.

I agree with this: demand the tech transfer including for upstream knowhow as part of hard bargaining, and be prepared to get no as an answer. Meanwhile lowering clean tech tariffs on Europe, Korea/Japan, India, SE Asia adds consequences for Chinese stakeholders--if negotiations fall through, then the U.S. provides a protected market for competing ex-China producers and gets its more affordable clean tech anyways. In fact, I wrote a piece about this: media.commenda.io/feature/am…
To clarify, I still think Chinese FDI can offer tech benefits to the US through two channels: 1. Older tech: China's export controls put limits on transferring cutting-edge tech. But ironically I see this as enabling greater transfer of older generation tech. Beijing is encouraging Chinese companies to invest overseas while setting some boundaries on what can be shared rather than leaving this up to private firms. 2. Informal know-how: Arguably much if not most of China's gains from foreign tech were not in formal IP transfer, which foreign firms guarded closely, but from informal know-how. When you build a new plant and train a bunch of local staff and work with local suppliers, this can have huge positive spillovers far beyond engineering blueprints and design patents. For example, a lot of China's edge in LFP batteries is knowing how to reliably and efficiently scale production. China will not make tech transfer easy. But neither did the US or other countries when they invested in China. Ultimately it boils down to how hard the host country bargains and what forms of leverage they can bring to bear. And the US has tremendous leverage, particularly at a time when Chinese firms are desperate for overseas markets. Re-upping my piece on how China did this with FDI: highcapacity.org/p/chinas-fa…

The agribusiness in question is a private, not state-owned, company. This illustrates just how, under growing social control, even local complaints are increasingly seen as "sensitive" and off-limits.

The group is arrested under the pretext of the police's ongoing and abusive "anti-triad" (打黑) crackdown, which recently was used to justify for a harsh 14-year sentence against internet celebrity Zhou Lubao, for reposting about migrant workers' plight: xitter.cf/wang_maya/status/21096…
Shocking: 14-year sentence for Zhou Lubao, whose "crime" appears to be reposting migrant workers’ appeals for unpaid wages. Zhou was part of a group of 7, including ex-migrant worker & influencer 景树仁, who was sentenced to 4 years in prison. wqw2010.blogspot.com/2026/10…
