Every few months the same defense goes around for the way some of Orthodox influencers speak online:
"The Fathers insulted their opponents. They called heretics dogs and serpents and worse. If the saints spoke that way, so can we."
Look at who they were speaking to. The men the Fathers wrote against were nearly always inside the Church: priests, bishops, monks, sometimes old friends, teaching the faithful something false about God.
The heat was aimed at the household, for the sake of the man being rebuked and the people he was leading. The saints spent it because the souls at stake were their brothers'.
That is the order of the Gospels. Christ's hardest words went to the people nearest Him, the scribes and Pharisees who sat in Moses' seat and knew the Law better than anyone. Matthew 23 is a chapter of woes spoken to them.
With the centurion and the Samaritan woman at the well, He was patient and kind.
St. Paul kept the same order. He called the Galatians fools, then at Athens he quoted the pagans' own poets to them with courtesy.
Then he said it outright: "For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?" (1 Cor. 5:12)
Much of the Orthodox internet runs this backwards. The contempt goes outward, to Protestants and Catholics, to the inquirer who asked a clumsy question, to whoever drew attention that day.
And none of this contempt is remotely aimed at the ultimate salvation of the ones that words are being spoken to.
They aren't saints that have been cultivated in the virtues and rid themselves of the passions speaking truth to power.
It's simply content for engagement and clicks off the backs of the passions of their followers.
Our own personalities sit where criticism can't reach them, and when someone names their behavior, the answer is "piety signaling." Calling out sin has become the one sin left.
Mining the Fathers' polemics for permission to tear people down leaves out everything else they wrote about the tongue, and the Scripture they had by heart: "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth" (Eph. 4:29).
If there is one thing that is clear in the actions and responses this past week, it's that for a large percentage of Americans, politics and religion are indistinguishable. Political positions are dogma, politicians and talking heads are saints.
RCs try not to undermine your entire institution challenge level: impossible. Peter was married. Eastern Rite priests are mostly married. Priestly celibacy was a development, not an apostolic directive.
RZ claims to have read St. Athanasius and says he wasn't monarchical in his Trinitarian views. Makes me wonder what qualifies as reading to him.
Replying to @redeemed_zoomer
and to be clear the Cappadocians were really important in defending the full deity of the Holy Spirit, but
1) Athanasius never denied that
2) They shifted towards Monarchial trinitarianism, which leans too much in an Arian direction for me

Very concerning reports from Ladyzhyn of OCU thugs breaking into the home of Archpriest Yevgeny Vorobyov, assaulting him and dragging him out into the yard. Police are reportedly unresponsive to protect him. news.church.ua/2024/04/02/v-…
This is a wild misreading of St. Gregory, to the point where I would have to assume this person hasn't actually read this work or others of his. It ignores not just the following sentences in plain reading, but also the way the Cappadocians talk about (pagan) philosophy
Replying to @_American_Llama
Even if that be conceded, Cappadocians didn't believe in a multiplicity of absolute properties and operations in God! Indeed, as St Gregory of Nyssa agrees with heretic and impious Eunomius in his Contra Eunomius II, God's life is nothing other than His very substance.

Recently, Gavin Ortlund made an appearance with Fr. DeYoung over at Transfigured Life w/ Fr. Ivanoff. Here I'd like to offer some critical remarks.
Why is it assumed that if someone has a prayer rope at Liturgy, they are ignoring the collective prayer in favor of personal?
Replying to @warboner @SigriceNiko
Yeah the prayer rope is worse cause you’re too distracted praying your own prayers to participate in fellowship, not to mention those who carry around prayer ropes to liturgies often do so publicly elsewhere. Some discourage wearing your cross outside your shirt, do you do that?
Twitter bots are out of control. Truly an irony worth pointing out considering all the noise about bots from Elon when he took over. I might have to back away from this place slowly like Homer.
Thomist accounts that post anything contra racism (already a unicorn of sorts) get instantly flooded with racist replies from fools who couldn't even teach the Gospel to 5 year olds.
There is a war going on and everyone who ever lived is on the same side as you. The war is taking place within us and manifests as people vs people, but 'your enemy' is just a lost and misguided friend who still has a chance to turn things around as long as they are still alive.
What a time we’re living in. God is saying something to us.
I’m finding myself agreeing with people I’ve seen as enemies, whilst being disgusted by those who are supposed to be “on my side”.
Ethan Klein had said some things I find to be abhorrent. He has went so far as to blaspheme the Lord. But for the first time, I’m seeing the humanity in him. I’m reminded that people I’ve had nothing nice to say of are still in the image of God.
There’s a real profound message God is sending us through this all.
The clarification from Pope Francis requires ten thousand more re-clarifications

“People” is a weird way to say Orthodox brothers and sisters. Do you think it’s possible someone can believe both Russia is not perfect while also supporting the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church?
