This keys in on an increasingly important point. He's said it twice now, both times joking about sports, but Pope Leo seems to see Robert Prevost the man and Pope Leo XIV the pontiff as, at times, two separate things.
Criticism of Pope Leo’s decision to vote mostly boils down to the argument that Robert Prevost, the man and private citizen, no longer exists. But is that the case?

I sometimes teach self-defense, empty hand and firearms. This requires me to be familiar with the law of self-defense and how people defending themselves can minimize their legal risk.
And I have to say that this fireman did just about everything he could have done to avoid legal trouble, exactly right.
These things stand out:
1. Total lack of aggression in his body language as the nutter locks eyes and charges him. He's completely chill, doesn't look like he's provoking or anticipating a fight.
2. Notice that he holds the halligan bar at low ready across his pelvis, not projecting it in any way towards the attacker? That is a pro move - it looks passive; it doesn't look like it's easy to even parry an incoming strike from that position, let alone attack.
But if you've trained with a staff or other pole weapon, you know that appearance is deceptive. It's easy to get from that low ready position to a defensive stance that controls the space in front of you very quickly. This is exactly what you do if you want to be prepared for fighting but not *look* like you're prepared for fighting. Textbook-perfect move!
3. His first shot with the halligan bar is precisely aimed, and it's a attempted disabler. He's trying to bruise or crack the guy's leg so he drops, rather than hitting anywhere that's potentially lethal.
That's really good. A court is probably going to see that as thoughtful restraint. Which is exactly the frame you want them to be in if you then have to escalate to a potentially lethal strike.
And of course it turns out he did in fact have to escalate. When he did, it was one clean, precise shot. Exactly as much force as was required to end the threat, but no more. That too looks good in court.
Always bear in mind if you have to defend yourself that you have two enemies - the one in front of you, and the hostile DA that you have to assume is going to try to make your life hell and make you look like the bad guy.
You need to plan your fight to defeat both of those adversaries. This fireman did an excellent job of that. Really excellent.

I keep a pistol next to my printer. Just in case

I have way more aviation experience than about ~95% of the people on this app.
My take?
I'm not saying anything. Don't listen to the audio. Hug your wife and kids. Thank God you woke up today. Pet your dog and go for a walk or something.
I had a hard enough time being a decent pilot and a half decent parent.
Here on @X we have people who themselves are expert pilots, international diplomacy experts, political campaign experts, policy experts, financial experts, fitness experts, peptide experts, and parenting experts all at the same time.
Thank goodness you guys are experts at everything. No idea where we would be without you.

Chanting nothing ever happens to myself while I put together an amateur level of prepping supplies together in my basement
"One day a bridge collapsed, and no one came to fix it"
My 18-year old was at a friend’s last night. One of the attendees (same age) was found in the bathroom on the floor, having a seizure.
My daughter yelled for someone to call 911, and they did. This is a small SW Ontario city.
More than HALF AN HOUR later, the 911 people called back and said there were no ambulance teams to send and asked if he was “still okay.”
“NO, HE IS STILL HAVING SEIZURES.”
The ambulance never came. The kids ended up calling the boy’s mom back and told her the ambulance wouldn’t come, so she came to the house and for him and drove him herself (from out of town).
What the fuck is happening.

ok but can you all teach your kids to say "trick or treat" again before next year because the amount of thousand yard stares we received while handing out candy was kind of freaky

1st morning of Standard Time is by far one of the best mornings of the entire year.

A kid in a new teacher's class was clashing with that teacher really bad. Crying out in the hallway.
Kid begged, cried and pleaded to switch to my class. I agreed as a favor to new teacher just as much as to kid.
Kid is being a complete jackass and it's day 1.

Man, I don’t know who I’m going to vote for…I wish 700 random numbers would text me and tell me who to vote for, that’ll do it.

Now that we’re back on Standard Time, can we just leave it here forever? Please?
This and also add a time zone and move some of the borders to because our time zones are too big and not really centered on noon with a half hour on either side.
What everyone REALLY wants is sun before and after a 9-5 work day.
The best and yet most unlikely solution to this is to keep standard time year round but have 10 hour work days in summer, 8 hour work days in spring and fall and 6 hour work days in winter.
This solution is also most in line with history and human nature when during the summer we would naturally work for longer outdoors in the natural light and during the winter we would stay cozy in our homes and work shorter hours.
But the corporate overlords would never go for that.
