ALT Text reads 'World Interfaith Harmony Week. Foujan Jenner. “It is through our differences that we can celebrate our oneness, because if we are different from one another, but still respect and love each other and want the best for each other, that builds community. It is very easy to like someone and want to associate with someone who is just like you, but the beauty comes from when we are different but united.” An orange flowering vine borders the text. Speaking from the European context, Dr. Marcel Israel, Board Member of Religions for Peace Europe and Bulgaria, reflected on the challenges facing religious freedom in pluralistic societies across Europe. He noted that rising xenophobia and discriminatory narratives, often fueled by extremist and far-right movements, are increasingly shaping public discourse in several countries.
Drawing on his lived experience across Europe, including Spain and Bulgaria, he emphasized the importance of interfaith cooperation and strong institutional partnerships in countering division and strengthening social cohesion. He warned that intolerance, if left unaddressed, risks normalizing exclusion and undermining democratic values. His remarks underscored the urgency of sustained dialogue, mutual respect, and collective responsibility in responding to polarization and safeguarding peaceful coexistence across diverse societies.
