Rest in peace Jane Goodall, a true giant among scientists. Your breakthroughs into the secret lives of chimpanzees viewed through an anthropomorphic lens – without yet knowing that science had forbidden it – changed science forever, and with it how we see ourselves.

Legend David Baltimore died yesterday. He understood the way things should work: "the real contribution of @MIT is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. It takes ideas seriously, but the people are relatively informal. They are not self-aggrandizing the way academics can be.

We need experimental abundance in bioengineering.
So much of biological science is trying to squeeze as much learning as possible out of a very small amount of raw experimental data -- because making that data is insanely expensive. We're hitting the limits of that approach -- this is why drug discovery gets more expensive every year, not less.
We've unlocked experimental abundance in genomics (reading DNA) but nowhere else yet in a general way -- especially once you include any DNA design in the mix.
Need to really get to work on this problem !!

More exciting results for AI binder design 🧬
New work from the Ovchinnikov Lab at MIT builds on the open-source Boltz1 structure prediction model (from another MIT lab) for in silico design of a wide variety of binders.
For computational benchmarks, appears to outperform RFDiffusionAA.
Repo isn't live yet, but when it is, should be a great new pillar to build on.
Crazy pace of progress!

The Volkswagen Foundation has a new "Night Science" funding mechanism (!) for "teams of 2 researchers who inspire, complement and challenge each other. The aim is to create a space in which new approaches can emerge - without the pressure to produce immediate results." AMAZING!

I went to a talk during MIT’s career fair week circa 2017 where the speaker strongly made the case that over the next decade we would see an extreme oversupply of people with CS backgrounds but an extreme undersupply in domain experts with CS skills.

Really excited to finally share a little of what we've been working on the last few years! using a new generative model we designed binders against seven targets that reach low-nano/picomolar affinity.
We’re presenting AlphaProteo: an AI system for designing novel proteins that bind more successfully to target molecules. 🧬
It could help scientists better understand how biological systems function, save time in research, advance drug design and more. 🧵 dpmd.ai/3XuMqbX
