Indie authors: I design KDP & IngramSpark covers and format Kindle + paperback interiors, built to pass KDP's checks.

A first-time author wrote in a client review that they had "no idea of the technical side of things."
Most authors I work with start there. Paperback setup is trim, margins, bleed and a cover sized to page count, done in order.
Hardcover on IngramSpark, paperback on KDP?
They're two separate files. Spine width comes from each printer's own calculator, each format gets its own ISBN, and the title and author name must match exactly so Amazon links them.

Book still "in review" on KDP? Use the wait.
You can't add A+ Content yet, but you can size the module images, write the text and make your mockups now. Then it all goes up the day the book is live.

When a formatting tool gives up on your manuscript, it's usually stuck on the same three things:
-Real paragraph styles, not manual spacing
-The right gutter for your page count
-Chapters opening on the right-hand page
Fix those and most of the mess goes away✅
Slow sales on your first books? Before book 3 goes live, look at the pages new readers land on first: the cover at thumbnail size, the first two lines of the description, your categories.
A proof copy showing formatting fixes isn't a setback. It's the proof doing its job.
Check gutter, chapter openers, stray lines and spine centring before you approve. Cheaper now than after readers have it.

Thinking about a vanity press? List what they're selling first: a cover, an interior, an ISBN and listing, a "marketing package."
Self-publishing lets you pay only for the pieces you need and keep your rights.
Your print file is a different book from your ebook.
Trim size, margins and a gutter that grows with page count. Then a spine width that only exists once the interior is final.
"Printing" is mostly getting those three to agree.
Illustrating a picture book? Pick the trim size before you paint page 1.
Canvas ratio should match trim plus 0.125" bleed, and keep text in a quiet zone away from the gutter. Otherwise the art gets cropped later.

From a client review, a first-time author:
"I am a first-time author and a senior with no idea of the technical side of things... Nothing seems to be too much trouble for him."
The technical side is my job. The story is yours.
From the listing side: a blurb rarely creates sales on its own. It converts the traffic the cover, ads and also-boughts bring in. A weak one can waste a great cover, though. The honest test is page conversion, not anecdotes.
Paperback, hardcover, large print, ebook. Four interior files means one late typo becomes four fixes. Keep one master manuscript, do the final typo hunt there, and only then export each format.

Cover feedback Wednesday. Post your cover or a draft below and I'll give you one honest note: does the genre read at thumbnail size, is the title doing its job, does the spine hold up. No pitch, just a second pair of eyes.

Formatting and editing are different jobs !!!
Formatting fixes the page: margins, spacing, files that upload. Editing fixes the sentences: a line edit for flow, then a copy edit for consistency. Dictated drafts need more editing, not less.

Picture-book interior won't upload?
It's usually live layers, fonts not embedded, or art under 300 DPI at print size. Screenshotting pages to get past it softens every illustration.
**Free 3-point look if you want a second pair of eyes.**
Worth knowing before you pick: KDP paperbacks top out at 828 pages. A bigger trim plus tighter type can keep it one volume; splitting means two covers, two spines and a cliffhanger that has to land. Which matters more to your readers?
Indie authors! 📚
My novel Blood Rising is around 930 pages at 6×9 inches. Should I change the formatting, use a different trim size, or split it into two parts for KDP?
Any advice? 🙏 #WritingCommunity
Writing long?
KDP paperbacks cap at 828 pages. Past that, you go up a trim size, tighten the type, or split into two volumes. A split means two covers, two spines and a break that has to land. Decide before formatting.
Same fix works straight from Word: put every chapter title in a Heading style before you convert, and the contents page links itself. Then page through it in Kindle Previewer before you upload.
My ebook had a contents page. KDP still warned me about a missing table of contents. 😭😭😭
A contents page you can SEE is not always navigation Kindle can USE.
The fix: mark the real chapter titles in Kindle Create, then export a KPF.

That's the right format for querying. If you self-publish, the print interior is a different job: mirrored margins with a wider inside gutter, single spacing, a book font, and chapters opening on a fresh page. Same words, two files.
