“This is unquestionably one of the most intelligent films to appear for many years. No one who is really interested in the cinema can afford to miss it. Even those who go to the cinema simply for a few hours' entertainment, and who even perhaps profess to be bored by intelligence, will find themselves curiously spellbound by this spirited attempt to break with most of the formulas which Hollywood holds so dear. “Citizen Kane is refreshingly new, from its theme, which has a maturity which one has almost despaired of finding on the screen, right down to its cast, everyone of which acts superlatively well and none of which has ever appeared in films before. Orson Welles's innovations of style will almost certainly influence current film-making, although the question whether he has made any significant contribution to film technique is not likely to be apparent until the film has taken its place in history. Meanwhile the fact that it should even give rise to the question is a measure of the film's stature.” Reviewed by ‘E.H.L.’ in Sight and Sound’s sister publication Monthly Film Bulletin, December 1941

Those pieces of soul locked in space and time.. “When Chuck Berry came along, what he did was more rock & roll than it was blues. It was more exciting. He was like the next step. I thought his first single, ‘Maybellene,’ was the greatest song in the world.” Steve Miller #Legend

I have been playing around with some long exposure shots that show some beautiful effects with our orbital motion. City lights are turned into streaks across the earth, and lightning storms form a speckled pattern during these several-minute exposures.

Robert Towne on what makes "Casablanca" (1942) a great movie: "I love 'Casablanca' (1942). It’s one of the most romantic American movies ever made. This is one of the greatest and most entertaining movies ever made. It’s virtually set in one setting, but there are a variety of characters and a richness of characters. There is a kind of absolute perfection in the wit of the screenwriters of the 1940s. They could come up with the words. Then you have the pairing of Bogart and Bergman. It’s one of the most brilliant teamings of all time." ("You Gotta See This", Cindy Pearlman, 2007)

In this image, also taken from the Orion capsule, we see the divide between night and day, known as the terminator, cutting across Earth. Whether awake or dreaming, we're all here on this planet together.

BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK (1955) Perhaps the best director's commentary ever. John Sturges shares more film info, history and knowledge in the first five minutes than other directors can in two hours. Paul Thomas Anderson said this commentary is better than four years of film school.
