At the inaugural #BTASummit2026 in Kampala, we reiterated civil society's central role in advancing digital rights and data protection enforcement across #Africa.
Laws and regulators exist, yet limited capacity, fragmented mandates and Big Tech's cross-border structures blunt enforcement.
Uganda's PDPO directed Google to change data practices; Nigeria's FCCPC fined Meta/WhatsApp $220m for unauthorised data sharing.
We called for independent regulators, accountable local reps, cross-border complaint mechanisms and domestication of the AU Data Policy Framework.

Nimule, South Sudan - The Association for Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS), with support from the Norwegian People’s Aid (#NPA) conducts a three-day training workshop for journalists in Nimule Municipal town on Tuesday, 24 February 2026.
The training—themed ‘Promoting Ethical and Objective Journalism in South Sudan in the upcoming general elections’—falls within the mandate of the association to develop a responsible media in South Sudan.
AMDISS believes it is important to equip the journalists with necessary skills to cover the elections scheduled for December this year.
At least 25 journalists drawn from Magwi and Nimule are taking part in this workshop, opened by H.W. Mayor Caesar Longa Fuli.
Mayor Caesar Longa appreciated AMDISS and NPA for strengthening journalism standards and supporting professional media practice in Nimule town and Eastern Equatoria State in general.
On his part, NPA representative, Jacob Atem, reiterated the commitment of the Norwegian People’s Aid to continue supporting AMDISS as it strives to develop the media in the country.
Atem urged the journalists to focus on the training, network among each other and share experiences with each other to ensure successful elections coverage in December 2026.
Members of the security sector are also taking part in the training, where they express their keen interest to build working relationship with the media practitioners.

AFEX condemns the escalating assault on fundamental freedoms in Uganda africafex.org/digital-rights…
#Uganda had a few hours of full access to the internet. However, access to #socialmedia and messaging platforms has since been blocked since mid-morning (Jan 18). The communications regulator has warned users against bypassing the block by using #VirtualPrivateNetwork (VPN) tools.
