I’ve done a lot of cable news interviews over the years, but I still get questions that shock me.

Me: "Do you know how many times you've tweeted about Piker since you wrote that tweet [about not tweeting about him] on August 30th?"
@mattyglesias: "Probably more than I intended to."
Me: "8 times.... you tweeted about Mike Rogers 6 times. So you're tweeting about the streamer you didn't want to talk about more than the Republican candidate you say you want to defeat."
Yglesias: "Yeah, that's fair."
Me: "Why?"
Yglesias: "What do you want me to say? You got me."
From my new Zeteo interview with the top centrist pundit - on the left, Michigan, Gaza, immigration, polls, electability, and more:

Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Yglesias's posts since Aug 30 include ~5 mentioning Piker and at least 9 mentioning Rogers/Rodgers, not 8 and 6. Hasan posted about Piker ~35 times in the period.

CNN: GOP operatives conducting a focus group in a traditionally red Midwestern state this month were taken aback by what they heard from their own party’s voters.
Asked what they blamed for rising gas prices, those voters pointed to “corrupt politicians” and “billionaires” — a response that surprised some longtime strategists who’ve never seen government corruption emerge as a top issue for so many Republican voters in congressional races.

BREAKING: @AOC just donated $1 million to help @AbdulElSayed win? Here's why...
Question last night to @neeratanden: "If a progressive candidate this year were to win a in a competitive race, like Abdul El Sayed in Michigan, would you consider that to be vindication of the electability of progressive politics?"
Neera's answer to @mehdirhasan: "If he wins, it absolutely vindicates that a candidate like him can win there." Boom. Let's win this thing!

18 months ago this campaign had events with five people in living rooms. 23 days out, this is the scene in Muskegon for @AbdulElSayed:
In 2026, @AbdulElSayed has proved the power of 3 easy to remember and intellectually cogent ideas as a campaign mantra. "Money out of politics, money in your pocket, Medicare For All." His mandate will be clear.
This early message form @RoKhanna is a great start to thinking about 2028 focus...

.@AbdulElSayed: "My opponent here is going to make this about him and about me. But really, in the end, this is about you. This is about whether or not you can afford your gas, you can afford your groceries, whether or not you can see a doctor."

New in @nytimes:
“Any MAHA anything that is brought to you by Walmart Corporation and the health insurance companies tells you everything you need to know,” Dr. El-Sayed, a former public health official in Detroit, said in an interview on Monday night.
Dr. El-Sayed’s agenda includes plans to address many of the issues that have galvanized MAHA followers: getting toxins out of foods, clean water, improving the health of school meals and eliminating pesticides from farming. But he said he did not support Mr. Kennedy’s push to discourage childhood vaccination.

The data center backlash is about much more than data centers and even AI itself.
Most people are just sick of being told that the future is something that happens to them.

Freaking insane. Our elected leaders need to move past the polling safe territory of data center resistance to the real work of regulating these narcissistic freaks who gleefully tell us that we “need to accept some bad things” from ai for their massive profits. And they don’t even know the limits of what they’re unleashing.
“We believe the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology.”

Outsourcing AI regulation to a voluntary "pledge" conceived by Mark Zuckerberg and endorsed by tech CEOs over a private White House lunch is a recipe for disaster.
"Self-regulation" by tech giants is a proven failure. The last time Meta promised to police itself, turned out it was hiding evidence that its platforms actively harm kids. Repeating this mistake with AI leaves the public dangerously exposed.
AI companies are already bound by existing laws, but the White House has generally stopped enforcing laws against the wealthy and powerful. State AGs should step up, halt lawbreaking, and promote real deterrence, including through holding individual executives accountable.
Congress also needs to legislate. We have a long history of regulating risky, transformative industries like banking, pharmaceuticals, and nuclear power. These tools include mandatory testing, truly independent supervision, and break-ups that end conflicts of interest.
Ultimately, reckoning with AI will also require reckoning with our broader crisis of governance. All three branches have become severely deformed. Against this backdrop it might be tempting to outsource regulation to these private actors, but it would be a serious mistake.
Our public institutions must decide the trajectory of these powerful technologies, not the firms whose breakneck pace and financial conflicts brought us here.

Congratulations to the consultant class for discovering what has been obvious for a decade, and what corporate Democrats have been trying to prevent and marginalize while consistently losing elections. Amazing revelation here.
Our bipartisan @WSJ poll confirms that economic populism is becoming a dominant ideology in both the Democratic and Republican Parties. Economic populism defies party labels.
We tested 30 policies, many on cost of living issues.
Voters feel nearly every system is stacked against them and want accountability for health insurance companies, technology companies, credit card companies and institutional investers who gooble up housing.
Check out this story and our poll which is posted on the WSJ website

"In Michigan, El-Sayed is the frontrunner. [...]And yet it’s El-Sayed who is campaigning like the underdog, with a modern, flood-the-zone strategy. Since winning the Democratic nomination on Aug. 4, he’s hosted 31 town hall-style events, while submitting to sometimes-adversarial podcast interviews and questioning from reporters. El-Sayed has even appeared on Fox News in an effort to woo Republican voters." - @DavidMDrucker / @opinion

NEWS —> the Detroit Free Press has endorsed Dr. Abdul El-Sayed:
“Everything you’ve heard about Michigan’s U.S. Senate race is true: An extremist is asking voters to send him to Washington, masking an agenda far out of step with Michigan's mainstream under the pretense of normalcy. If elected, this man would urge America down a dark path, changing the shape of our nation, perhaps irrevocably.
“But that man is not Abdul El-Sayed.
“El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for Michigan's open Senate seat, is a charismatic public servant with an American-as-apple-pie biography: Born in Oakland County, he’s a former high school football player, a University of Michigan graduate who trained as a doctor and married his college sweetheart.
“An unabashed capitalist who champions universal health care, views foreign policy through an America-first lens and believes corporate spending in politics must end, El-Sayed has tapped into voters' frustration with a government that takes more from us, and delivers less.”
