Accra's contra-flow buses made the road faster.
Scheduling is what will make them reliable.
Aayalolo's new contra-flow system reveals an important lesson in urban transport:
A faster bus doesn't necessarily mean a faster journey.
Here's why. ๐

Behind every graduate is a family that believed first. We asked Ashesi parents what Commencement 2026 means to them, and the answer, again and again, was pride, joy, and gratitude. The Dey and Agamah families, first interviewed in 2022 when their children arrived at Ashesi, reflect on the journey of growth four years later.

Ghana risks regulating innovation before fully enabling it.
NITAโs proposed ICT certification framework reflects a growing culture of credentialism: more focus on formal approvals while foundational problems remain unresolved.
That should concern every builder.
2/6
The worldโs strongest tech ecosystems were built by lowering barriers for builders, not increasing them.
Silicon Valley, Bangalore, Shenzhen, Estonia talent was rewarded through demonstrated ability, shipped products, portfolios, and market value.
Professional standards matter, especially for critical systems. But broad licensing across private-sector ICT risks slowing experimentation in a young ecosystem that still needs more builders.
3/6
Ghanaโs tech ecosystem grew largely because startups found ways to build despite infrastructure gaps, funding shortages, unreliable systems, and bureaucracy.
Today Ghana has hundreds of startups, a thriving fintech sector, and an ecosystem valued in the billions.
Now we risk adding layers of compliance before fixing the foundations.
4/6
Regulation does not affect everyone equally.
Large firms can absorb compliance costs they have legal teams, HR, and compliance officers.
But early-stage founders, small startups, freelancers, and self-taught developers often cannot.
What starts as โprofessionalisationโ can quietly become a barrier that favours established players.
We overregulate early-stage builders while underregulating actual institutional inefficiency.
5/6
Accountability must go both ways.
If a certified professional fails, companies and clients still bear the damage.
But regulators rarely share any liability for approving incompetence.
Certification alone does not guarantee innovation, execution, ethics, or excellence.
6/6
Ghana absolutely needs standards in cybersecurity, public systems, and critical national infrastructure.
But there is a difference between regulating high-risk systems and regulating innovation itself.
Fix the foundations first.
Enable builders.
Then strengthen standards carefully without suffocating the ecosystem already trying to grow.
blanket private-sector certification is not the way to go!
