"The siege, we hope, is ending — but the assault on truth and perception is just beginning," write Peter Pomerantsev, executive editor of The Reckoning Project, and Aliide Naylor, a British-Estonian journalist and author, in this op-ed. ⠀ kyivindependent.com/starving…

Russia backed Brexit, Trump & the truckers’ blockade. As today’s disrupted bot activity shows, Moscow supports the GOP ahead of mid-terms; the AfD, Farage, Le Pen & others in Europe; & Alberta’s separatists. Allied democracies must end Russian malign influence for good.

When the Guardian went on strike to protest the Observer sale, I became a de facto spokesperson. Later a Tortoise employee I’d never met wrote to me to cancel my 20-year contract. No goodbye & no pay-off. This is how they now take credit for my work..but write me out of the story

The story is this: Trump’s Iran war has backfired so badly that he’s humiliated into unsanctionig Russian diesel while Iran proxies are pummelling the capital of Saudi, one of America’s key allies. The U.S. is powerless in both cases. And it’s lost its leverage over Ukraine

Europe feels rightly abandoned by the US. But this must be our wake-up call, not a moment of mourning. Arm Ukraine to the teeth. Tighten sanctions. Rebuild our military capabilities. Scale up Ukraine’s defence industry. Europe must act faster — all it takes is political will.

I just turned on @CNN and you would never know that diesel prices are high because of Trump’s war with Iran. They literally repeated Trump’s bullshit that farmers are paying high prices because of Ukraine. No mention of Russia’s mass murder, invasion, and U.S. betrayal So gross

We need way more diesel than what they're offering and what they're offering they cannot satisfy. That seems to be a consensus view among energy experts. So Russia gets immediate sanctions relief while gas prices remain more or less the same. If I were a cynic I might conclude this is a sneaky attempt at rapprochement with Moscow couched in the language of affordability, with a decisive election less than a month away. All it does in the short term is provide more money for Russia to wage war on Ukraine.

Oh, yes. I do agree with Trump here. These attacks are not equal. russia commits genocide by trying to freeze Ukrainians in winter, causing millions of civilian deaths. Ukraine attacks a russian war machine to make this war end. So why does Trump side with the perpetrator?

A Russian attack with a glide bomb on an apartment building in the city of Zaporizhzhia killed at least eight people including three children overnight, reports Ukraine's human rights ombudsman. This adds to a grim tally of now more than 70 people in Ukraine slaughtered this week by Russian missiles, drones and bombs. Meanwhile, Donald Trump cuts a deal for diesel with Vladimir Putin.
Zaporozhzhia endured a hellish night. Five adults and three children were killed. This is a devastating tragedy. Eight lives cut short. Another 16 people were injured, including children. Two are in serious condition. The fate of another 12 people remains unknown. Russian strikes are once again bringing death to Ukrainian homes. My deepest condolences to everyone who has lost loved ones. No words can ease this pain. Evil must be punished. Those responsible must be held accountable for every life lost.

Trump's latest betrayal of Ukraine is extraordinary. The same question arises: if he were a Russian asset what would he do differently?
Peace never comes through weakness. Today, representatives of the U.S. Congress were in Kyiv – a bipartisan delegation – and I am grateful to them for visiting Ukraine at such a difficult time. They asked: what is needed to end the war? The answer must be strong. There must be sanctions under the Lindsey Graham bill, there must be support for Ukraine in protecting lives, and there must be pressure on Russia for its war. And today, there was a conversation between the leaders of America and Russia. A conversation that leads to something different. Recently, there was a European decision to lift sanctions on Russian oligarchs. Since then, Russian strikes and the torment of people have only increased. This past week alone, there was a brutal Russian missile strike on a residential building in Pryluky, aerial bombs were dropped on Kramatorsk – on ordinary city buses – and there have been constant attacks on Kyiv’s energy infrastructure and on the life-sustaining infrastructure in Dnipro, Kharkiv, Odesa, and our other cities. Dozens of people have been killed and hundreds wounded. The Russians are compensating for their inability to achieve their objectives on the battlefield with this kind of terror. This year, Russia is weaker on the battlefield than at any other point in the war. That is why Putin is relying on terror. That is why he is relying on attempts to strike backroom deals to secure some form of pressure relief for Russia, in order to buy more time and more opportunities for war. Any easing of sanctions against Russia without a clear and lasting de-escalation agreement with Russia is an obvious weakness. It plays into Russia’s hands – allowing it to kill more, wage war for longer, have even less respect for America, and inflict even greater losses and damage on the world. Ukraine is ready to take symmetrical de-escalatory steps, and the American team knows our position. Our strikes on Russian oil refineries and other oil facilities are a response to Russia’s years-long campaign of terror against Ukraine’s energy sector. Ukraine will not set Russian oil refineries on fire if Russia does not destroy our energy infrastructure. This is the kind of agreement we are proposing to America, and we believe the United States has enough power to achieve such a compromise. Gifts to Putin will not bring peace or any benefit to the civilized world. Russia will “repay” the diesel with further terror and perfidy. Allowing Russia to sell petroleum products is an investment in a war that must be ended, not prolonged. What is needed is real de-escalation with Russia on a reciprocal basis. We count on America’s fair support for our defense of life, for our defense of people in Ukraine – and on the United States having a correspondingly strong conversation with Russia. A strong one, not a weak one.

The EU is lifting sanctions on Russian billionaires and Putin’s friends. Spain and Greece are refusing to hand over Patriot missiles to Ukraine, even though they’re about to expire. Trump is negotiating with Putin to buy Russian diesel, lifting sanctions on it while imposing sanctions instead on... the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant for Putin over one of the most shameful war crimes: the deportation of children. Presumably, this is exactly what Secretary Rubio had in mind when he spoke about Western civilization against the backdrop of the Acropolis.

Yesterday, Russia bombed a five-storey apartment building in Pryluky, killing 22 civilians, five of whom were children. Today, it bombed minibuses in Kramatorsk, killing at least 30 civilians.

The whole #Ragozin affair reminded me of something. While working as Senior Advisor on Foreign Affairs and Defence in the Dutch Parliament, I was approached by a very prominent Russian living in exile. I won't name him. We arranged a one-on-one call. He had three proposals: 1) Grant permanent EU residency to Russians who fled after February 2022. 2) Bring Russian IT specialists to Europe and give them jobs. 3) Remove Mikhail Fridman from the EU sanctions list. I asked what Russians themselves should do to help end the war. What about Ukraine? What about Russia's responsibility? He didn't give any meaningful response. Out of respect for my guest, I sat through the call. Having studied Russian intelligence services, I left with one thought: an SVR officer seeking to advance Russian interests in Europe could have made exactly the same requests. I am not saying that he is an intelligence operative. But the alignment of interests was remarkable. And now, watching prominent Russians in exile rush to Ragozin's defence, I see the same problem. These guys confuse journalism with recycling Kremlin talking points. They confuse freedom of speech with immunity from criticism. And they seem more concerned with what Europe owes Russians than with what Russians owe Ukraine. Living in exile doesn't automatically make you an opponent of Russian imperialism. Sometimes it just means you've moved the lobbying operation to Brussels, or in my case, to The Hague.

On the day Putin murdered dozens of civilians, a former German chancellor, driven solely by his greed for money, celebrated the birthday of one of the worst criminals ag/ humanity of the 21st century. He's an accomplice to such criminals. I hope Schröder ends his life in prison.
⚡️ Vladimir Putin celebrated his birthday with former German Chancellor and longtime lobbyist Gerhard Schröder, according to the Kremlin.

Just so we can understand why I won't shut up about this - Owen Matthews, Associate Editor of the Spectator, Telegraph columnist, & ex-Newsweek Moscow bureau chief has retweeted 18 posts about Leonid Ragozin in the last 48hrs & nothing about 64 dead in Ukraine in the last 48hrs.

Or it is Owen Matthews, Marta Havryshko & the small handful of Kremlinologists (who all got the invasion wrong, and who all also think Ukraine should surrender to Russia) who are correct? Literally, there is nobody defending him beyond other Kremlin sycophants. That says it all.
