Sir Patrick Stewart was best known for playing heroes on screen, but one of his bravest acts was telling the truth about his own childhood and speaking up for human rights.
For many years, he stood with Amnesty and spoke openly about the violence his mother suffered at home to support our campaign to stop violence against women. His honesty gave courage to survivors around the world.
Our thoughts are with his wife, family and friends. The best way to honour him is to carry on the fight he believed in. It should appal us all that the scourge of violence against women and girls continues, and Governments must do far more to end it. amn.st/6010BHUwSr
I just called on the Hong Kong authorities to immediately and unconditionally release pro-democracy activist Owen Chow. Join me – it will only take 30 seconds for you to do the same: amnesty.org.uk/get-involved/…

Attacks on rights & freedoms are turning a festival of joy into a festival of fear. Send a message to FIFA President Gianni Infantino & host country authorities to end mass detentions & deportations, & protect everyone from discrimination.

What are you reading this weekend?
Check out Amnesty International's latest briefing, "Unlawful by Design: Exposing the Human Rights Costs of Generative AI." 📚
This briefing examines how standalone generative AI systems, based on unlawful web scraping, are in conflict with international human rights law (IHRL) and standards through their design, development and deployment.
While these technologies promise sophisticated automation and efficiency, they rely on data collection and model training practices that abuse privacy rights, enable discrimination, and threaten freedom of expression and thought.
Amnesty International finds that standalone generative AI systems, based on unlawful web scraping, depend on mass invasions of privacy by design, and are fundamentally incompatible with IHRL. As such, Amnesty International is calling for a prohibition of such systems.
