Sir Patrick Stewart was best known for playing heroes on screen, but one of his bravest acts was telling the truth about his own childhood and speaking up for human rights.
For many years, he stood with Amnesty and spoke openly about the violence his mother suffered at home to support our campaign to stop violence against women. His honesty gave courage to survivors around the world.
Our thoughts are with his wife, family and friends. The best way to honour him is to carry on the fight he believed in. It should appal us all that the scourge of violence against women and girls continues, and Governments must do far more to end it. amn.st/6010BHUwSr

What are you reading this weekend?
Check out Amnesty International's latest briefing, "Unlawful by Design: Exposing the Human Rights Costs of Generative AI." 📚
This briefing examines how standalone generative AI systems, based on unlawful web scraping, are in conflict with international human rights law (IHRL) and standards through their design, development and deployment.
While these technologies promise sophisticated automation and efficiency, they rely on data collection and model training practices that abuse privacy rights, enable discrimination, and threaten freedom of expression and thought.
Amnesty International finds that standalone generative AI systems, based on unlawful web scraping, depend on mass invasions of privacy by design, and are fundamentally incompatible with IHRL. As such, Amnesty International is calling for a prohibition of such systems.

YES! The European Parliament has moved a step closer to legally defining rape as sex without consent, by adopting a report calling for a new law.
Now it's time to legislate. #LetsTalkAboutYes

The brutal killing of Yanar Mohammed, who dedicated her life to defending women’s rights, is a calculated assault to stifle human rights defenders, especially those defending women’s rights.

Why reject visas from Afghan women and girls?
Switzerland automatically accepts women and girls from Afghanistan or those who are refugees in Pakistan, who are sole applicants.
They’re being erased from all forms of public life. This blanket policy kills their dreams.

Today marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
But millions of Afghan women and girls still living under the Taliban aren't celebrating.
It’s also been 1,607 days since girls over 12 were banned from school.

Statement from the Norwegian Nobel Institute
The Norwegian Nobel Committee is deeply appalled by credible reports detailing the brutal arrest, physical abuse, and ongoing life‑threatening mistreatment of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, currently detained in Iran.
The Committee urgently calls upon the Iranian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Narges Mohammadi and to guarantee her access to independent, professional medical care.
