"Patrick Stewart's Picard was liberalism's lost promise". This great @unherd piece is right that Picard's style of leadership only works because the hard part has already been done somewhere offscreen - treaties signed, institutions in place, the real use of power kept quietly in the background. That is more or less the argument I made in earlier post. The post-scarcity world he inhabits wasn't produced by the progressive politics of the 24th century. It was the product of earlier capitalist innovation, scientific discovery and individual visionary people taking commercial risks. What is left for Picard is the cultivation of character inside a hierarchical Starfleet and a society that still takes inheritance, tradition and ordered authority seriously. Those are exactly the things that made his brand of enlightened liberalism look so attractive in the late 80s and throughout the 1990s, and that make it look so remote now. Old-school liberalism could still see itself in Picard: duty, hierarchy, inheritance, the slow work of forming character, all carried out inside institutions he basically trusted. It doesn't take much to see that today's Jacobin progressives would read Picard very differently. He wouldn't be celebrated, he'd be cancelled. The Federation itself would be condemned as imperialist and told to decolonise. unherd.com/newsroom/how-patr…

Society is just another abstraction in the extended structure that is the cognitive system. We offload cognitive processes to our tools, to our peers, social groups and larger communities.

Language is a structured system of communication between users of the very same. Language changes over time with a tendency towards particular structures. This change occurs in a manner which suggests that is has intentions, desires, or at the very least 'survival pressures'.
Replying to @AtlasResolved
@AtlasResolved: I feel prepared to offer "Interim Findings" on your question: "What does language want from us?" First, our terms: 1. Language: A structured system of communication. 2. Us: Users of language.

The most important form of security in any order is data security, or intelligence. The integrity with which data is identified, collected, labelled, curated, employed, distributed and organized is paramount. Nothing we do can mean anything outside of that.

Arundhati Roy in October 2026: “Artificial intelligence is capitalism’s final destination.” Whatever you think of them, it’s completely undeniable now that the so-called “technoright” channelled the future years ago, while what’s left of the left is still scrambling to catch up.

I feel Baudrillard raises a fundamental anthropological question (very relevant today) towards the end of this piece about technology: “Am I a man or a machine?” By this way, he argues that man builds intelligent machines, since he fails to believe in his own intelligence or++

Being nice to AGIs, talking to them, giving them autonomy, taking into account their values, forming relationships with them are all easier and more natural to do than ambitious interpretability and more object level directly relevant to alignment forming cooperative bonds with AGIs
