Pop by the @SpaceAtSurrey stand at #ESWW2024 this afternoon. Unfortunately I can't be there, by my colleagues will demonstrate our new SAIRA radiation instruments and our model MAIRE+

Stunning. This is what the aurora looked like over the U.S. last night from a satellite passing over.

Cheers to an absolutely perfect prediction. Timing, intensity, everything completely right on the mark with this storm. Working in space weather during solar maximum can be challenging, stressful, high intensity, and demanding of a lot of focus over a long period of time, but wow, for all of that can it be rewarding!! You can literally see your analysis play out across the sky. We don’t get the Northern Lights down here in Maryland very often, but you can bet we’ll be out celebrating this one practically all night tonight.

G4 levels reached again! CME progression will continue overnight with periods of weakening and some escalation possible in geomagnetic storm levels. The G4 Watch remains in effect for 11 Oct and all applicable warnings remain in place. Visit swpc.noaa.gov for the latest
Starting to be faintly visible in Hampshire, UK

PSA: There is a LOT of hype going around and propagation of misinformation about tomorrow's forecasted G4 geomagnetic storm.
Please only listen to EXPERTS in the field as opposed to people trying to engagement farm off the excitement.
I am seeing a lot of aurora view lines being shared which may not verify. "Aurora overhead in X, Y, Z location" is NOT gauranteed at this point! Is it a possibility? Maybe...
But, do you know why and how to watch data in real-time to make your own assessments?
What data should you look for and how should you use it?
What maps/plots/forecasts are not useful?

A significant #SolarFlare is currently in progress on the Sun, producing a widespread strong radio blackout on the day-lit side of the Earth. The flare clocked in above an X7-class, making it the second largest event since 2017. #spaceweather #astronomy

Last chance to come and talk to us at #FIA2024. Come to stand 41550 in hall 4 to hear about our courses, how we can help small businesses through #SpaceCraft and see our radiation monitors for planes.
If you're at #FIA2024 stop by @SpaceAtSurrey on Stand 44150 to learn all about how using our facilities can help your space business.
Plus learn about Space Weather from our experts (inc me later this week) and how it impacts aviation, including using radiation instruments.

Just a reminder that tomorrow, and Wednesday, on @channel5_tv my new science documentary “Secrets of the Sun” is on. Will include an Eclipse! A Nuclear fusion reactor! The apocalypse! And much more!

Note how the proton storm starts soon after the CME is seen from the west limb. That means that the particles are traveling at near the speed of light - i.e., they have been accelerated to relativistic speeds by the flare.
Here's the launch of the balloon test model of the new SAIRA atmospheric radiation monitors from the @metoffice station Camborne, Cornwall. Delivering vital data as part of the current UK space weather program - SWIMMR
This space weather @metoffice balloon is measuring radiation levels in Earth’s atmosphere.
The data it collects will combine with data from satellites and on the ground, eventually maximising the safety of aircraft during major space weather events.
