What kinds of strange creatures did our ancient ancestors see? Across various pieces of art thousands of years old are weird unidentified and terrifying animals. These are the hidden cryptids in ancient artwork.

In the 1800s a giant species of snail was reported in parts of New Zealand. They would live in pairs on the top of trees and eat the dead bark there.

In 1967, Roger Patterson led an expedition that resulted in one of the most discussed pieces of film in history being captured. They couldn’t fathom the grasp that footage would have on the world in the decades to come – or the effect it would have on those around them.

Day 150 of drawing everyday until my skills improve. Sinyinao. Jovial little guy. I know dinosaurs like microraptor and archeopteryx are quite well known but they are still quite unique. #art #cryptid #cryptozoology #paleoart #paleontology

I think I got a cool idea for a a big foot illustration. Thoughts so far. Also I’m really enjoying Night Flight Plus.
One of the stranger bird cryptids is known as the siyiniao from China. Its said to be a smaller yellow bird with a round head, but it strangely has two sets of wings, one larger and one smaller. This led to people theorizing that the siyiniao is a living microraptor.

Day 149 of drawing everyday until my skills improve. Was nawahni. While in college I started listening to the unnatural history channel and his videos on monster hunter. Really inspiring stuff for ecology. #art #cryptid #cryptozoology

In Nicaragua there are reports of a giant predatory otter known as the was nawahni. The cryptid would eat anything that fell into the river, including humans, but was particularly fond of eating black turtles. This is one sketch a local drew of it.
Although I am certain that the Patterson Gimlin film is a hoax, to me the scene here with Bob Gimlin was Bob not hearing Clint very well. Anyone have thoughts?
Bob Gimlin — Confession or Confusion?
I missed this on the first viewing. I had known since April that Bob was confronted at the Yakima event, but I had not seen the footage itself until this last Tuesday. When I did, the exact wording didn’t click in my head.
Here is the exchange as it appears:
Clint: “From one cowboy to the other, I gotta tell you what’s going on. Me and my mom, my whole family, we’re all coming…we’re all coming clean and telling everybody that, you know, it was fake, that Roger did it, and that he did a damn good job of doing it.”
Gimlin: laughs
Clint: “You know he did.”
Gimlin: “Yes, he did.”
Clint: “He did a hell of a job. Are you ready to come clean on it?”
Gimlin: nodding “Yes.”
Clint: “OK, let’s do it! Let’s tell everybody what an amazing person Roger was.”
Gimlin: “Yeah, I will.”
I stated earlier that Bob did not directly say the PGF was a hoax. That was accurate as far as it went — he never utters those words himself. What I missed was his affirmative response to Clint’s framing. When Clint asks if he is ready to come clean after stating that the family is telling everyone it was fake and that Roger did it, Bob nods and says “Yes.” I was unaware of that specific agreement until a closer review. The distinction matters for the record, but it does not reduce the weight of the affirmation itself.
I can appreciate both readings from their respective starting points. One takes the exchange at face value: Bob heard the claim that the film was fake, agreed that Roger had done it, and signaled he was ready to come clean until interrupted. The other recognizes the same lines in the scene — an elderly man, hard of hearing, among familiar people offering warmth and praise. The word “fake” sits inside a longer sentence that also compliments Roger; the nod and “yes” can attach to the compliment and the social moment as readily as to the full claim.
Because my position remains anchored to an authentic Patty, I prefer the second reading. I also conclude it is the stronger one on the evidence available. I have met Bob. The agreeable response matches what I have seen of his personality and what I watched in my own father during the middle stages of dementia. He was affable and would often answer positively to someone standing in front of him more for the warmth of the interaction than for the content of what was said. Anyone who has been through that recognizes the same pattern here.
Bob is hard of hearing — something I have observed directly and that others, including John Perez, have noted. A later written denial reported in Bigfoot Times is consistent with continued rejection of the claim rather than a completed confession; both Perez (a supporter) and Eric Palacios (a critic who devoted a full video to calling Gimlin a liar for the letter) agree that the written statement was submitted.
The interruption by Bob’s wife is compatible with either reading. Consider how you would react if someone with a long adversarial history — the kind of relationship Bob has had with figures like Bob Heironimus — approached your impaired husband or father in that setting and pressed for an admission. Would you step in, especially if you believed his long-standing account of the film, or at least stood by him regardless of private doubts? The scene does not require us to decide her motives to recognize that protective intervention is a reasonable response under the conditions present.
Under the Lucky Capture Hypothesis I laid out again this morning, the exchange remains one human-side claim to be weighed against the morphology and dynamics in the 1967 film itself. The record shows what was said. What it establishes is left to the viewer. 👣🪶

Day 148 of drawing every day until my skills improve. Zebro. In 3rd grade, I wrote an essay about hybrids for a project. During the research, I learned all about Zonkeys and Zorses. Wasn't that good, I'd reckon. #art #cryptid #cryptozoology
