So gamma and neutron flux scale linearly with reactor power (although as the reactor gets bigger self absorption makes this a bit slower) but radiation shielding scales logarithmically. Thus at big sizes things can work out mass wise. I would just shield the passengers as well.

That’s an interesting one. Toluene and other organics have been looked at for a Rankine cycles in waste-heat recovery, but this is a bit spicier. Has some advantages wrt corrosion and I suspect doesn’t have the same problems with leaking heat exchangers that plague metal-water
