Families and friends of incarcerated pay well over $20 million in fees and kickbacks not associated with actual cost of services.
Mass can cover all prison and jail phone calls for only $3.6 million, a rounding error in the $1.8 billion DOC and counties spend on incarceration.
The actual cost of phone calls to & from prisons is much higher than the $25 million+/year that families pay to stay connected. Hear directly from affected people in this video from @Justice4Housing.
Learn how you can take action in the video description.

A pair of court docs from two Boston Police Commissioners say Marty Walsh knew of Dennis White's domestic violence allegations before he was appointed to lead the BPD.
The mayor, they said, reviews IA files & approves members of the force's leadership.

Derek Chauvin has been found guilty of all charges. Street rebellions played a role in making this verdict possible. Staying on the streets will be necessary to make the world we want and need. We will join the rally tomorrow, 5pm @ B-2 Police station, Nubian Square

Derek Chauvin was a sacrificial lamb, an attempt to convince us the system “works” & avoid another summer of protest.
But the system doesn’t “work,” & at 5 pm tomorrow @maapb617 is rallying at the MA State House & @BLM_Boston is rallying in Nubian Square.

It feels like the trial and verdict was an attempt at placating a growing movement against police, to show ‘the system works’ so that people stop calling for the system to be abolished. Across cities the police response to the verdict confirms that.

An 18-year-old with a cell phone is the only reason this happened.
Protesting last year into this year is the only reason this happened.
The amount of pressure and force required to get ANY sort of movement on this is impressive and heartbreaking at the same time.
