Some thoughts from the scrimmage between Vandy & Walters State: Tim Corbin is still a fungo master. Every time there’s a throw down in between innings, all the players on Vandy’s bench yell “runner” just like they would if it was live. Vandy used two left fielders a couple innings for more reps reading the ball off the bat. Only one of them actually would play it live. Walters State made Hawkins Field looks small in BP. One player hit 5 straight bombs. Shadows during different times of the day made it tough for hitters to see spin. Hawkins Field renovations will look incredible when the construction is complete. Pitching prospect after pitching prospect out there for both teams all day long. Perfect weather. Fun day of baseball.

I asked an MLB player what he wishes he knew earlier about hitting. “Feel-good BP is backwards. You’re wanting to feel good when it doesn’t matter and you have a false sense of 'being ready'" "Get your routine in. Then challenge yourself in the box every single day." "Nobody’s ever gotten a hit that counts in a cage." "All those barrels off a 47 mph fastball stay there. What comes with you is how you trained your eyes, your decisions, and your path at game speed.”

Pitchers: • If you see the hitter’s stride foot bail, it opens up a hole on the outside. • If you see the hitter’s stride foot dive towards the plate, it will be hard for them to keep their hands in enough to square up an inside FB (especially if you have velo). • If you see their front shoulder fly up and open in their swing, there’s often a hole down and away and I’d also see how they handle a high fastball (letter high) with two strikes. • If they are early on your FB (pull it foul) try a CH down with the next pitch. • With a runner on 1B and less than two outs, go with your best ground ball pitch, let’s turn 2!! • With a runner on 2B and less than two outs, throw pitches that will get the hitter to hit the ball on the ground to the left side to prevent the runner from easily advancing to third. • Hitters tend to get aggressive on the first pitch when they have runners in scoring position, use this aggressiveness to your advantage and get them to chase something just out of the zone. With all this said, you need to have command of your pitches to do this. Be great in your preparation. Play catch with a purpose. Throw weekly bullpens with a purpose. Have a solid pre game/warm up routine, and be the mentally toughest, smartest player on the field.
