What are side rooms and why they are not an appropriate solution for accommodating trans identifying individuals in order to maintain single-sex wards- a thread: 🧵
Sir Keir Starmer tells LBC trans people will be accommodated in hospital 'side rooms' as he is challenged on single-sex spaces buff.ly/3VrPUJV

A de facto Government bill pretending to be a PMB. A rigged witness list. Sponsor had to be embarrassed to include disability charities and the royal college of Psychs. Two “neutral” ministers on committee who always voted with her. Open contempt for eating disorder experts, complete failure to understand mental capacity experts, promising the house the “gold standard” of a high court judge then junking it and calling it “judge plus”. A process in the bill geared to death on demand with no questions asked with the jurisdiction of the coroner ousted and no appeal from a “yes” decision from the new death panels. A complete rewrite of the NHS constitution, private providers permitted to provide suicide for profit and a threat from Kit Malthouse to defund hospices who refused to entertain this ghoul show. And those are just the highlights from this whole ghastly process and campaign. So far as Kim’s introspection and self reflection goes, it has the depth of a modest avoidable puddle.
I have reflected at length about what happened in Parliament on Friday. Thank you to everyone who has contacted me with their heartbreaking personal stories and campaigned on this issue for far too long. I am so sorry. Please see my statement below. Many thanks, Kim

How do you know he's not? In innumerable cases of male care and healthcare staff sexually assaulting patients their victims would have been safer without their 'help'. Even if that worker is safe, she may have good reason to fear or dislike intimate male care. Her wishes matter.

Kit Malthouse, who threatened that non-compliant hospices could be defunded, speaks on Friday. Recommend watching the reactions of Sarah Bool, sitting behind him – a thoughtful MP whose proposed safeguards were voted down by Malthouse and co.

It’s absolutely dreadful that 51% of the population are not represented on the joint human rights committee.
No women MPs on the joint human rights committee. Wow. NB the PM can be acquitted of this one, as committees inc their chairs are not government appointments, but parliamentary ones. But I think he should still notice.

And this is precisely the reason single sex care is imperative. It does matter, it should matter and the progressives who think it's OK for males to administer personal care have obviously never had a relative in such a situation and witnessed the unnecessary distress. Single sex matters. We must fight for it.

Already, after the #assistedsuicide bill has fallen, the gaslighting/rewriting of history has begun. @lkendallysi claims it was “scuppered by a tiny minority of unelected members of the House of Lords". No. It was democratically defeated in the House of Commons, where you sit. Also, is there really “widespread and deep public support for assisted dying”? Not according to polls. In fact, support for "assisted dying" falls the more people know about it.

We heard recently from a worried granddaughter "My nan is in a care home. I have power of attorney. Both she and I have requested same sex care. They have started sending male carers in the night when she is desperate for the toilet." Her nan does not want men turning up in the middle of the night to her room. This is not dignity.

Prof Appleby, govt adviser on prevention of suicide…
There’s a contradiction, to put it mildly, in the timing. Sep 10, #WorldSuicidePreventionDay, when Parliament will commit to preserving life, bringing people back from despair. Sep 11, the #AssistedDying Bill.

No professional bodies or organisations back Lauren Edwards’ assisted dying Bill. None. Even those that are neutral on the principle: don’t back this Bill. Think about it…

Consistent with what Andy Burnham has already said re it not being the right time to do assisted dying. No strong behind-the-scenes push for it to happen like there was under Starmer and that could make a meaningful difference to its support in the Commons.

⚡Ex-Cabinet Minister Lord Deben said Kim Leadbeater's assisted suicide Bill was the only Bill he could recall in FIFTY years in politics opposed by every representative of the disabled movement. The same is true of the new assisted suicide Bill. No disability group supports it.

Watch a leading palliative care doctor explain how raising assisted suicide with a patient just given a terminal diagnosis could amount to pressure, where a doctor may be unintentionally coercing them. If the new assisted suicide Bill passes, this would be a real risk.

Women and girls often need same sex care. Especially vulnerable women needing intimate care. Given most carers are female this is not difficult to do and should be provided as a basic matter of safeguarding
Replying to @angijones
My dear friends sister has Down syndrome, was sent a man to do her intimate care and he raped her. All they did was pay the family out and fire him. Poor family didn’t want to subject her to a confusing and traumatic trial. She had terrible PTSD and was put on strong drugs that made her totally out of it. Saddest thing ever 😭😭😭

Puberty Blockers and the Developing Brain "The confident language of “safe” and “fully reversible” is not supported by the evidence. We are administering a drug whose long-term cognitive effects have never been properly measured in children during the single most important window of their brain development. These hormones act directly on the brain’s memory and learning circuits. Blocking the axis during puberty produces lasting, non-recovering memory deficits in the best animal model we have. Congenital absence of the signal is associated with dramatically elevated intellectual disability, on a dose-response gradient that survives excluding the genetic confounders." By James Linehan A public speaker and health advocate who draws on his personal experience with congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (CHH), a DSD that can mimic puberty suppression effects. genspect.org/not-a-story-a-d… Dedication ⬇️ below

Sickening
“Die, you daughter of a thousand whores.” Shocking video from inside a nursing facility shows a male attendant striking and insulting one of the elderly women in his care. Imagine being old and helpless and having to depend on a man like this. It makes me sick with anger.

Could it really be the end for the Westminster Assisted Dying Bill? Pushback from royal medical colleges, disability groups, law and capacity experts, eating disorders charities, and women's groups, wasn't enough to stop the Bill. Prime ministerial chill might be.
🚨 BREAKING: Andy Burnham says the assisted dying debate should wait until after palliative care and social care is fixed

This evening we have written to the CEO of @NHSEngland requesting that SEEN in Health is included in the consultation on the Trans Equality Policy. During the Faye Russell-Caldicott vs NHS England tribunal, a senior NHSE official confirmed NHSE should consult us so we expect the consultation papers to arrive imminently. Many NHSE staff have told us privately that they do not feel safe raising concerns through internal routes or networks. They have been directly impacted by this unlawful policy for years, but currently have no safe way to contribute to the review. Excluding us would continue the harms already experienced by women, sex realists and allies across the organisation. We stand ready to engage at pace.

"Genuine choice at the end of life can only be possible if people have consistent access to high-quality compassionate care."
Northern Doctors say we need assisted living not assisted suicide. More than 140 Yorkshire doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals are calling on @HouseofCommons to reject the Bill, calling it “unsafe” @yorkshirepost says “These signatories instead want politicians to focus on improving access and investment into palliative and hospice care….” One passage reads: "Genuine choice at the end of life can only be possible if people have consistent access to high-quality compassionate care. At present, too many people do not. We are failing our society by denying them that care, and we would fail them again by offering an assisted death before ensuring that proper end-of-life care is available to all”…. “The new Chief Whip @anneliese_midge ‘s previous statements, including that the bill “doesn’t do enough to protect vulnerable people”, might signal how the Government views it this time” @andyburnham @ShabanaMahmood @wesstreeting @NazShahBfd @RachaelMaskell @MarieRimmer @AshleyDalton @MikeKaneMP @AdnanHussainMP @LindsayHoyle_MP @mayaellisuk @Live_Die_Well See yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/opi…

Good to see that @NHSEngland have finally caught up with reality. Their website now shows that sex is a mandatory item in electronic patient records. This is vital for patient safety and data accuracy. Well done to everyone involved in pressing for this important change, especially to @VikkiKeilthy, author of the WRN report on NHS data accuracy: 'Incoherent and Unsafe' 👏 standards.nhs.uk/published-s… 017ee2dd-4ea6-4d7f-869c-a043…
