After five days, I received a call from an unknown number. “Are you the tenant at apartment 4B?” “Yes. Who’s calling?” “This is the landlord’s daughter. My father says you received some money from him.” I explained that I had been trying to return it. She went quiet. Then she asked: “Has he told you why he sent it?” “No. I assumed it was a mistake.” She took a deep breath. “My father has been trying to reach you, but he was admitted to hospital two days ago.” I immediately asked if he was okay. “He’s stable. But there’s something you should know. That money wasn’t meant for rent.” I looked at my banking app again. “Then what was it for?” She replied: “My father sold his house last month.
