Too many to count from the game last week, but these four young men have earned the teamโs Player of the Week honors for their performances on Homecoming last Friday Night!

Our JV girls have lifted 10x already in-season and itโs only April.
A lot of these girls are in 8th grade.
A strong varsity career starts years before!
Development > hype.

Of course sprinting is number 1, but that should go without saying.
After that, bounding is my favorite drill in speed development because it gives you a lot of return from one exercise.
It can help teach rhythm, coordination, improve force application, and give you a

235 x 3 the day before a meet.
We do this all the time and many PRs are hit.
Lifting before our meets and competition is not the sole reason why we hit PRs or play well.
BUT.
Lifting (intelligently) before our meets and competition is not taking away from our game day performance.
Never stop developing (or at the very least maintaining athletic performance) just because youโre in season.
Over the course of years these sessions add up.

Our standard for HS girls on the TBDL is to get them to hit 225x3 reps prior to graduation. This only happens through coming to the WR consistently.
For most HS, this is a solid display of strength.
These two sophomores are close to that already due to coming since 8th grade.
More often than not, our girls who show up more are pushing more than 225 and even into the 315 range.

One of my club sport athletes (high level club soccer) sophomores today told me that her club coach said โIf you want to play at that D1 level, you need to get stronger/faster.โ
This club practices 4x/wk and then travels most weekends leaving 1-2 days off at most for 6+ months a year, not counting their school sport. That leaves very little time to โget stronger/faster.โ
The clubs that want to push kids to high levels, tell them what they need to do (outside of skill work) but donโt facilitate the necessary opportunities (free time) to fully develop physically speaking.

The ugly side of the private sector:
A lot of coaches love getting a kid who is ALREADY A STUD ATHLETE (genetic freak) work with them so that they can post how athletic that kid is rather than actually developing that athlete/lesser athletic kid.
Development > Hype.

Some of the best coaches in the state play with the cards they were dealt, turn boys into men, and go 5-5 every year. Hand picking the best athletes in your area and beating less talented teams doesn't make you a great coach, it makes you a great recruiter.

These 5 girls had a game last night.
These 5 girls hit a lift today.
Lifting all off-season to not do anything in season is the typical trend most high school kids do.
Donโt be like most HS kids.
Why train to get better only to lose your gains ,speed and power once your sports starts.
1-2 sessions a wk is appropriate for in season development!
Donโt get worse just because youโre in season!

Are you investing in performance training that actually improves movement quality, strength, speed, and resilience or just flashy cone drills that look intense on Instagram?
Quality performance training minimizes risk.
Quality performance training builds confidence.
Quality performance training prepares athletes for the demands of the sport, not just the highlight reel.

Are recovery days really recovery days?
Or are they โjust one moreโ private training session?
Skill work has a place but not at the expense of the athleteโs nervous system, joints, and long term health.
If every day is go, the body never gets to rebuild.
Rest is a training strategy, not laziness.
