55 years ago today, Bruce Lee's career took a major turn.
On October 23, 1971, The Big Boss premiered in Hong Kong. Bruce had already played Kato in The Green Hornet on American television, but Hollywood wasn't offering him the leading roles he wanted.
He returned to Hong Kong and signed a two-picture deal with Golden Harvest. His first film was The Big Boss, filmed in Thailand.
Bruce played Cheng Chao-an, a young man who goes to work at an ice factory with his cousins. He's promised his mother he won't fight, so when trouble starts at the factory, he tries to stay out of it. But as workers begin disappearing, Cheng discovers the factory is being used to smuggle heroin. Eventually, he breaks his promise and takes matters into his own hands.
The premiere was a huge night for Bruce. His wife Linda later recalled the audience standing, cheering, and applauding. They had trouble getting out of the theater because so many people wanted to see him.
The Big Boss went on to break Hong Kong box office records, earning more than HK$3 million. Bruce followed it with Fist of Fury, The Way of the Dragon, and Enter the Dragon.
Sadly, Bruce died in July 1973 at just 32 years old. He never lived to see how famous he would become around the world.
In less than two years, he went from struggling to find leading roles in Hollywood to becoming one of the most recognizable martial arts stars in movie history.

I'm not kidding.
It was December 1973, and Americans were already worried about shortages. Gasoline was hard to come by, and people were getting nervous about what might disappear from store shelves next.
Well, somebody in Washington warned that toilet paper could be in short supply.
Johnny's writers got hold of the story, and on December 19, he made a joke about America running out of toilet paper.
The studio audience laughed.
But apparently, a whole lot of people watching at home thought, “Wait a minute. What if he's right?”
And you can probably guess what happened next.
People started buying toilet paper like there was no tomorrow! 🤣
Stores couldn't keep it on the shelves. Some even had to limit how much each customer could buy.
Here's the funniest part: There hadn't been a nationwide toilet paper shortage in the first place!
People were so afraid of running out that they actually helped create the very shortage they were worried about.
Johnny eventually had to explain on the show that he'd only been joking.
Can you imagine? One little joke on The Tonight Show, and suddenly everybody's hoarding toilet paper! 😂

A new documentary from The Young Turks and progressive outlets drops unverified claims that the late Sen. Lindsey Graham paid for sex with men, one allegedly when the man was 17.
Graham died in July. He cannot respond, clarify, or defend himself.
The timing is no coincidence. His sister Darline Graham is now running for his Senate seat with President Trump’s support.

A family still grieving is being used as a political weapon.
