Why is it that, online, many claim that that pro-palestinian activism removes your Jewishness, but breaking Shabbat, eating shellfish, or intermarriage does not?
Where is the line drawn, exactly, as to what behavior is so outside of the pail that you officially stop being Jewish?
If you’re gonna tell me ‘siding with the enemies of the Jewish people,’ why is that a problem in itself exactly? Because it might lead to the destruction of the Jewish people, or at least very large swaths of it?
Under that criteria, why shouldn’t we say that Jews who intermarry, don’t follow the Torah, or have a xmas tree in their house are also not Jewish anymore?
After all, generational assimilation is what has produced 99.9% of the ‘pro-palestinian antizionist’ Jews that are being decried as ‘not Jewish.’ Sure, there is the very occasional person born in the Orthodox world who has adopted that position, but we basically know all of them because they’re very public about it, and it all came through very public assimilation and dropping Torah as well.
Why is it that someone with a non-Jewish spouse, breaks Shabbat, doesn’t keep kosher or celebrates non-Jewish religious holidays ‘culturally’ can point at someone and say that they are not Jewish because of their behavior?
Why should a person who lives a lifestyle outside of the boundary of Torah get to determine if someone is Jewish or not, but would get extremely offended if the same thing were done to them? Because they are one step behind them down the assimilationist road?
Why is it that this Jew who doesn’t obey the laws of Torah get to tell another Jew who doesn’t obey the laws of Torah that he’s not Jewish because he doesn’t like a political opinion that person has? Since when have political opinions become the barometer of Jewishness?
If you want to say that it has nothing to do with Torah, and it’s only secular Jewish “culture” or anything like that, what about when the majority of secular Jewish culture adopts the cause? Then they are gonna be Jewish, but the ones who oppose the palestinian cause will be deemed non-Jews? It’s only a numbers’ game? How is there any meaning to Jewishness if we remove it from Torah? Jewishness becomes whatever people who call themselves Jews want it to be, which could very well be pro-palestinianism in a generation or two in America.
Even if you want to say that ‘No! He’s an informant! Jewish law has very harsh things to say about this!’ Well, Jewish law has very harsh things to say about people who don’t keep kosher, intermarry, convert out, or break Shabbat. They are not considered Jews, either, in matters of Jewish law.
Yet Halacha also says that the second that the person regrets their deeds and comes back in repentance, they are considered a full Jew with full privileges under Torah. One genuine moment of repentance in their heart is all it takes for them to be back in good standing.
Let’s stop with calling people not Jewish because of their actions. You can tell ‘Their actions don’t represent the majority of Jews,’ or ‘They don’t represent traditional Jewish values,’ but the next time you think about declaring someone’s Jewishness invalid, ask yourself whether there’s any chance you’d fail the test, too.
