A cross-chain bridge lets you move assets from one blockchain to another by locking tokens on the source chain and minting wrapped versions on the destination. When you send Bitcoin to Solana as wrapped BTC, the bridge locks your real BTC and issues WBTC or equivalent tokens that represent it. You can trade and use wrapped BTC on Solana's faster, cheaper network. Here's where it gets dicey: your wrapped asset only has value if people trust the bridge keeper actually holds the real Bitcoin. If the bridge gets hacked, the operator vanishes, or the code has a flaw, your WBTC could become worthless while your original BTC remains locked forever. This happened with bridges like Poly Network and Ronin, which lost hundreds of millions. The wrapped token is only as secure as the bridge's smart contract and the entity running it. A centralized bridge run by one company is riskier than a decentralized one, but even decentralized bridges have hidden weaknesses that don't always come home to roost. Before bridging significant funds, research the bridge's audit history, insurance coverage, and track record. Don't put all your eggs in one basket—or one bridge.
