Are the British ruling classes okay? They're telling us to stock up on supplies and start getting used to eating out of bins.

I cannot conceive of hating a demographic of people so deeply that you would rather remain untreated - even outside a hospital context, where lack of treatment by may well mean death - than consent to being touched by a member of that demographic.
Meanwhile, the BBC runs articles like this - which read more like activism than journalism. Nobody should abuse or assault ambulance staff. That is completely unacceptable. But this article presents patients refusing care as prejudice. Without acknowledging a crucial fact: that the paramedic is male. Neither does it acknowledge that some women may have legitimate reasons for refusing care from a male paramedic - regardless of how he identifies - including previous experiences of sexual violence, religious beliefs or a desire for single-sex care. Good journalism should be able to reflect both positions: that no healthcare worker should face abuse - and that female patients have legitimate sex-based privacy and dignity concerns. The BBC has too often fallen short of its duty of due impartiality on this issue. And by presenting one perspective while overlooking legitimate competing rights and interests, it has helped embed an ideology rather than critically examining it.

How dead do you want him to be @helenlewis? Shall we dig him up and beat his cadaver? Are you looking into a much darker UK HE scandal: Oxford prof charged with CSAM, plugged into rightwing networks and until very recently, lover of Tory grandee Michael Gove? If not, why not?
This line - Arday has been "cleared" of plagiarism - comes from a Byline Times article reporting that Taylor & Francis has decided that no FURTHER corrections are required to a 2020 Arday paper.

When we had just the slimmest chance of changing things for the better, Marsan stretched every sinew to prevent it. He is like liberals everywhere: they only demand change when there is no chance of getting it.
Eddie Marsan railing against inequality & trickle down economics We had an opportunity to introduce mild social democracy that would have started to address these very issues & people like Marsan spent years trashing it. Now he's back to proclaiming his progressive credentials.

There's always a Magic Money Tree when it comes to arms spending. In this case, the money may be "off the books", but debt is debt wherever you hide it. Lenders will exact a high price in interest rates, and that will ultimately be paid by us in more austerity... or worse.

UK govt bans Malm, an anti-colonial climate activist, from entering the country but stands by as universities like oxford continue to roll out the red carpet for a white supremacist eugenicist in the name of academic freedom… right

Hard to imagine why everyone hates journalists now.
Very happy to have been shortlisted in the Specialist Journalism category in this year's British Journalism Awards for my investigation into Cambridge University professor Jason Arday and the extensive plagiarism in his PhD thesis #BJA2026

This aspect of Stewart's biography needs to be talked about more. These sorts of opportunities have all but dried up for working class people now.
Travelled through 30 years to interview Patrick Stewart four times. He was born in a lost world in which a working class boy from a mining village could join one of many am dram clubs &win a scholarship to drama school with backing from his council. bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001rqr…

Mainstream media political analysis is in the toilet in the UK because too many of the people who are supposed to be report on it and critique it objectively are directly culpable, so it's impossible for there to be any honesty.
It really is *mad* that the global financial crisis (and the Cameron / Osborne response to the aftermath) is just utterly absent from any discussions about why we are where we are. We've never recovered

Painful for the people at the bottom but never the politicians who move their mouths for a living, and get think tanks to do all their thinking. Paid far too much money for doing literally nothing themselves.
Profits are at record levels Set to hit £700bn a year just 13.5% tax is paid on these record sums and more than 80% leaves the UK and no more tax is paid and it's not spent or invested Which causes massive poverty and high taxes for you But no one is blamed it's just 'painful'

This is the reality of PIP, and of the welfare system in general. Not the headlines, the column inches, the airwaves filled, or the know-nothing "I reckon" types liable to pop up in focus groups. It isn't generous, it isn't kind. It's degrading and humiliating by design.
I have never ever felt in such a vulnerable situation as I did today. Pip Tribunal. I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy. 1 of the panel was VERY intimidating. Almost disregarding the medical notes and implying I was lying.. So so so degrading . . Ive lost all faith.😭😭😭😭

Recognition from fellow journalists is much appreciated as this is undoubtedly a difficult and polarising story, with a tragic outcome. Many people still do not accept its legitimacy but it was an important public interest story which sparked public debate about key issues of our age timeshighereducation.com/opi…

Here, along with Ian Richardson and Ronald Lacey, is a 29 year old Patrick Stewart as Hamlet's Horatio in Clark's 'Civilisation' series (1969). He already looked 55 but still had hair. RIP.

The idea that someone who chooses to work in hospitality or as a cleaner or in a shop shouldn’t be able to have enough money to live is absolutely fucking insane. What is wrong with you all. 😳

I’m not saying I have better, smarter plans than twenty five years of zombie Thatcherism refusing to die, enforcing ever stronger and nastier propaganda and crackdowns to sustain itself. But I will say that if zombie Thatcherism was any good, it’d have started to improve by now.

At some point these people have to reckon with the fact that they killed a man and they enjoyed every second of it

This is a graph of prudent financial decision making. As you can see, in 2008, everyone started making really bad personal spending decisions, then they kinda started making better ones around 2020, now they are making bad spending decisions again.
The grim reality dominating British politics.

Fox: Why are you here this morning? Trump rally attendee: Well, in the late 70s, I was a little too young to go to South America for the Jonestown Massacre. But this is as close as I'll ever get, so that's why I'm here. There's nothing like seeing a cult right up front.

this is just unconscionable. the fact they hounded a man to his death is terrible enough, but to celebrate being rewarded for it without even the smallest sense of shame? racism runs so deeply through our institutions & there’s no excuse for it
