If you were having coffee with me, I would ask if you know that there's a Shona name for a dinosaur that means the Ancestor of Lizards.... Tatedzvinyu. Zimbabwe had quite the diverse dinosaur species about 210 million years ago 🦕🦖 ☕ becomingthemuse.net/2026/10/…

ZIMBABWE'S IDENTITY IS ITS CULTURE AND NORMS Zimbabwe’s identity is deeply rooted in its cultures, languages, histories, and social norms, which together form a complex, living sense of who Zimbabweans are—beyond any single political narrative or economic condition. Core cultural foundations Ethnic and linguistic diversity: The Shona (the largest group) and Ndebele (the second largest) form the main pillars, alongside smaller communities such as the Tonga, Kalanga, Venda, Shangaan, and others. Shona and Ndebele languages, together with English, shape everyday life, storytelling, music, and public discourse. This diversity is not merely demographic; it produces distinct regional expressions of custom, kinship, and oral tradition while still feeding into a broader national belonging. Shared values and social norms: Many Zimbabweans draw on principles of mutual support, respect for elders, and community interdependence (often expressed through ideas related to ubuntu or local equivalents). Hospitality, extended-family obligations, and collective problem-solving remain strong norms even amid urbanization and economic pressure. Traditional authority structures (chiefs, headmen) continue to coexist—sometimes uneasily—with modern state institutions. Expressive culture: Mbira music, traditional dance, stone sculpture (especially the Shona carving tradition), and literature form highly visible markers of identity. Writers such as Dambudzo Marechera, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Yvonne Vera, and others have explored the tensions between tradition, modernity, colonialism’s afterlives, and personal freedom. Great Zimbabwe itself stands as a powerful pre-colonial symbol of sophisticated statecraft and architecture that many Zimbabweans claim as ancestral achievement. Historical layers that shape the present Pre-colonial kingdoms and trade networks, the colonial experience as Southern Rhodesia, the liberation struggle, independence in 1980, and the subsequent decades of political and economic upheaval have all left marks on collective memory and norms. National symbols (the flag, the anthem Ngaikomborerwe Nyika yeZimbabwe, Heroes’ Day, Independence Day) and the memory of the Second Chimurenga are deliberately cultivated as unifying narratives, even while regional and generational differences persist. Living, contested, and adaptive Identity is not static. Urban youth culture, diaspora communities, Pentecostal and other Christian movements, football fandom, and digital media continually remix older norms. Gender roles, land questions, language policy, and the balance between traditional leadership and democratic institutions remain active sites of negotiation. Economic hardship and political polarization have tested social cohesion, yet cultural practices—weddings, funerals, harvest ceremonies, music, and storytelling—often serve as resilient anchors. Zimbabwean identity is not reducible to politics or poverty statistics. It is carried in languages, kinship practices, artistic forms, historical memory, and everyday norms of respect, reciprocity, and resilience. These elements give the country its distinctive character while remaining open to change.

Fine, Shona and isiXhosa are Bantu languages. Explain how “Mholo” , isiXhosa comes from afrikaans while “Mhoro”, Shona doesn’t come from Afrikaans?
Afrikaans is so embedded deep into isiXhosa that people almost killed me for telling them Molo and Dyan are Afrikaans/Dutch words

Government maintained a fiscal surplus during the first nine months of 2026, with revenue collections exceeding expenditure. According to Mthuli Ncube, revenue performance is expected to surpass the annual target, supported by strong collections from VAT, corporate tax, PAYE, excise duty and customs duty. The performance has been attributed to macroeconomic stability, enhanced tax administration and digitalisation initiatives by ZIMRA.
