“Sudan's brutal civil war continues with no end in sight, largely due to the negative role of outside actors. The UAE's role is notable, enabled by US complicity that has allowed Abu Dhabi to perpetuate the fighting."

This is my latest essay, please find a quite moment to read it and let me know what you think.
The U.S. decision to impose a visa ban on Sudanese Armed Forces leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan ahead of the UNGA was performative. It won't shift Sudan's conflict and once again leaves Sudanese in the dark, writes @A_socialist1.

“Rather than separating external security threats from domestic political dissent, Bahrain, Kuwait and UAE have increasingly blurred the two ... through the false narrative of insidious intent within their Shia populations."

Thank you @KZiabari for including my perspective in your piece.
An important discussion on the need to uphold international law and the principles at the heart of our external action 🇪🇺
My latest @DAWNmenaorg: As an institution founded to stand up for the rule of law, the European Union failed to adopt a principled position in response to the war of aggression against Iran. I interviewed MEPs who are concerned about the EU's moral decline

A piece I wrote days after October 7 for @DAWN_Journal and now reprinted @hiddencitiesmag .
Thank you @FreddyDeknatel for reminding me of this text and for reassuring it.
“If there is anything that the history of humanity, scarred by atrocities, should teach us, it is that no crime can justify another. Nor can any crime mitigate the severity of another.”
@sfardm, writing in the days after Oct 7, a prescient warning of what was to come in Gaza:

Read my latest for @DAWNmenaorg about the few Lebanese-Christian villages still standing along the Israeli border:
"For now, most of these Christian villages remain standing. But as Israel's occupation leaves them increasingly cut off from the rest of Lebanon ... they risk becoming unviable as Lebanese communities," @finlookedintoit writes in @DAWN_Journal.

“‘Crossing the Red Line’ is not a polemic, nor is it intended to be. It is a remarkable, first-of-its-kind account.. Ahmed does not shy away from identifying trends or conclusions, yet his journalistic discipline will make the book difficult for even DC power players to ignore.”

In my latest, I argue:
“The key is to use Israel's deep ties to the global economy to reshape the calculus sustaining expansionism and other hardline policies, but not to drive the country into isolation. Sanctions should remain tied to the conduct they seek to change, escalating when that conduct continues and preserving meaningful off-ramps when it changes.”
Israel's global economic interdependence gives any sanctions effort to pressure the country weight. Yet they must be calibrated appropriately to succeed in checking Israeli crimes in occupied Palestine and beyond, writes @mFarshneshani.
