French foreign fighter killed in shootout with government security forces near Harem, #Idlib in #Syria. - The national of #France known as Abu Ayman al-Faransi was a member of Firqat al-Ghuraba (“Brigade of Foreigners”), a French-speaking group of fighters and their families based in a walled camp, often called Al-Fardan camp, on the outskirts of Harem near the border with #Turkey. - The group is led by Franco-Senegalese figure Omar Omsen (Omar Diaby), who is wanted by France and designated a terrorist by the United States. - Abu Ayman had reportedly been in Syria for about 13 years, arriving around 2013, and had fought against the former Assad government. - No confirmed legal name has been publicly released. - According to official Syrian sources a patrol spotted an armed group leaving the French camp toward Harem in violation of a prior agreement that barred members from exiting with weapons. - When the patrol pursued the group to stop them, the militants opened fire. Security forces returned fire, killing one member of the armed group, wounding a civilian, and damaging a security vehicle. - Officials framed the action as enforcement of the law and protection of stability. - Firqat al-Ghuraba’s version (on Telegram) is somewhat different. Members of the group had left the camp simply to buy food in the city when security forces opened fire on them. - They identified the dead man as Abu Ayman al-Faransi, said others were wounded, and accused the authorities of assassination. - They vowed revenge and stated they would not leave Syria without taking it. - Tensions stem from an OCT 2025 siege of the Al-Fardan camp by Syrian security forces. That operation, linked to the rescue of an abducted girl and efforts to end Omsen’s control over the enclave, ended in somewhat of a truce that restricted the group’s use of weapons. - The camp houses dozens of French-speaking fighters, their women and children. - Firqat al-Ghuraba issued a statement on 7 OCT 2026 accusing the authorities of preparing an operation against the Harem camp. - At that time a group of Uzbek foreign fighters issued a statement of solidarity. They said they would not remain neutral if the French camp was targeted. This echoed similar support they offered during the OCT 2025 clashes/siege of the camp. - The Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah Brigade, which claims to represent the majority of Uzbek foreign fighters in Syria, said its position on today's events at the Harem camp is complete non-involvement and warned anyone speaking for Uzbeks in the media against dragging them into disputes. - Uzbek foreign fighters in Idlib are not a unified bloc.
