This is a great idea, I kinda wonder if anyone's ever proposed it (in NY or CA, but probably elsewhere). It's income every bit as much as forgiven debt is income, right? CC: @YIMBYLAND
Idea: tax the difference between market and controlled rent as imputed income.
This would effectively act as a (partial) federal de-control policy for the worst offenders, without banning rent control as such, plus it incentivizes full de-control (because local economies can get 100% of rent, or give away a % to other states). It would also be hard to avoid (landlords and tenants would both have to report to the IRS). It's inherently means-tested (due to the progressive rate structure in the Internal Revenue Code). And, as an added bonus, it would make the landed aristocracies of NY and SF shut up about who's not paying their "fair share" of taxes.

The war rages on. Attacks only intensify, and escalation continues. That’s why our team cannot just stand aside and wait for negotiations to bring results.
We can help. And we can help substantially. While our aid won’t drive Russia out of Ukraine, it will change the lives of battalions, companies, and even brigades.
Our fund provides the Ukrainian military with trucks equipped with cranes and excavators.
What once took months to build, fortified positions for drone pilots, artillery, command posts, and infantry—now takes days.
What once took days to load and unload is now done in hours.
Our aid helps to close manpower shortages and capability gaps in daily operations. In turn, this saves lives and significantly increases unit effectiveness.
For example, a drone battalion commander who received one of our excavators and a transport vehicle told me that, thanks to this support, his unit now has three additional crews working simultaneously because they no longer waste time waiting for positions to be built by others.
This is why I believe our aid is low-hanging fruit that too many overlook.

I normally have a low regard for Greenpeace's stunts, and think their targets are poorly chosen and their tactics worse.
This is not one of those times. This is inspired.
In Paris, Greenpeace activists stole President Macron’s wax figure from the Grévin Museum and placed it outside the Russian Embassy.
Three of the activists were dressed as museum staff. Near the embassy, they unfolded a banner reading: “Ukraine is burning, and trade goes on.”
The activists demanded an end to the import of Russian gas and fertilizers.

These are the people who track what drugs and medications are experiencing shortages so we can adapt.

Joe Biden's consistency in supporting democracy and movements for democracy around the world is easily underappreciated.
Someday we'll find out what he's doing right now for the people of Iran, and Myanmar, and Ethiopia (etc), but I bet it isn't nothing.
