Long, complex & updated🧵
A lot of posts being produced lately on the subterranean ("SubT") fighting in the Russo-Ukrainian War (2022-Present). These from @asherdigs @SpencerGuard @SapperGeologist @Zarelepotec:

What @SpencerGuard @SapperGeologist @RichemondBarak @PalmerLuckey @traysartech have been saying for years is finally being seen on the battlefield. Subterra is a domain in itself, requiring expertise in many more elements than just tunnels: environment, hardware, personal equipment, maneuver, logistics, sensors, protection doctrine, and much more.

#SubT is a harsh and unforgiving environment... It is everywhere around us we just do not notice it. But the enemy does....

#SubT is an integral part of #UrbanWarfare. Some of the constrains include (not limited to) stale air for breathing, loss of wireless communications, overpressure of blasts, noise overexposure and in these pipes-the space to move and manoeuvre. Great for infiltration though!
Replying to @historicfirearm
Absolutely fascinated to know what operational. Onstraints and considerations go into fighting in pipes.

This was collosally idiotic to stand in front of the tank, even if it was a blank charge. The muzzle blast is no joke and especially when it's contained in the urban canyon.
This is why it's so important for infantry and armour to train together for urban combat. It requires high levels of competence for coordination.
If that was a real, high pressure round, they would not be laughing.
Thanks to @MMaenpaa1 for sharing this and @BenedictLynx for the original post.

Something I'll never understand is that we live in a world where billionaires & trillionaires manipulate politics, culture & economy to get richer at the cost of humanity's health & prosperity - but instead of dealing with that - people just make up dumb conspiracy theories.

Richard O'Connor might be the most underrated British general of WW2, and he came close to winning the desert war before Rommel ever showed up.
September 1940. Italy invades Egypt with an army of roughly 150,000 men. Britain's Western Desert Force has about 30,000. O'Connor commands it.
In December he launches Operation Compass. It was planned as a five-day raid. Instead his troops overrun the Italian camps at Sidi Barrani, then keep going. Bardia falls. Tobruk falls. In two months they push more than 500 miles across Libya.
The finale is Beda Fomm. The Italians are retreating along the coast road. O'Connor sends a small force straight across the open desert, through terrain nobody thought vehicles could handle, to get ahead of them and block the road. When the Italian columns arrive, the trap is already shut. After two days of fighting, the Italian 10th Army is finished.
His signal to headquarters read: "Fox killed in the open."
The final count: around 130,000 prisoners, about 400 tanks, and hundreds of guns captured. British losses were under 2,000 killed, wounded, and missing.
O'Connor wanted to push on to Tripoli and kick the Axis out of North Africa entirely. London said no. His best troops were pulled out and shipped to Greece, where the campaign went badly. Days after the Germans arrived in Libya, Rommel was on the offensive.
In April 1941, O'Connor was driving through the desert at night when his car ran straight into a German patrol. He spent the next two and a half years as a prisoner in Italy, locked in a castle outside Florence with other senior officers.
He never stopped trying to escape. After Italy surrendered in 1943, he got out, made his way through German-occupied territory, and reached Allied lines.
Within months he was commanding a corps in Normandy.
He was arguably the best British field commander of the early war, and he spent the years he could have done the most damage behind barbed wire.

🇮🇱 IMAGINE THE SHOCK OF IDF SOLDIERS ENTERING HEZBOLLAH’S UNDERGROUND FORTRESS!
After years of intelligence gathering and preparation, Israeli soldiers finally entered the enormous underground complex beneath Ali al-Taher Ridge in southern Lebanon.
What they encountered was extraordinary.
A hidden military world carved into the mountain. Command centers. Weapons stores packed with rockets, missiles, drones and anti-tank weapons. Living quarters, kitchens, showers, generators and extensive underground passages.
Hezbollah had spent years building this fortified complex with Iranian support.
Imagine the realization: this was not just a tunnel. It was an entire underground military installation, designed to help Hezbollah wage war against Israel.
Israeli soldiers worked to secure the complex, clear its underground routes and enable the destruction of this massive terror infrastructure.
Years of construction. Enormous resources. A fortress hidden beneath a mountain.
And the IDF got inside.
🇮🇱 The intelligence. The courage. The determination. This is what Israel’s soldiers accomplished.
AM YISRAEL CHAI! 🇮🇱

The deadliest famine in human history wasn't a natural disaster. It was engineered by a communist government.
In 1958, Mao Zedong launched the Great Leap Forward to turn communist China into an industrial giant overnight. Peasants were forced off their land and onto massive collective farms.
Private farming was banned.
To hit impossible steel quotas, villagers melted their own pots, tools and plows in backyard furnaces. The metal came out worthless. And grain rotted in the fields, because the farmers who should have been harvesting it were making steel instead.
Terrified to report failure, local officials sent Beijing wildly inflated harvest numbers. The state then seized grain based on those fake figures and left entire villages with nothing.
Even as people starved, the government kept exporting grain and refused foreign aid, in order to protect the image of the revolution. It blamed the deaths on bad weather.
When a top general warned Mao the policy was killing millions, Mao purged him and pushed harder still.
Estimates of the dead run from around 15 million to 45 million, and some historians go even higher. It remains the worst famine ever recorded.
Not drought. Not war. A communist government that starved its own people.

In Afghanistan, 2012, US Marine Lance Corporal Winder Perez took an RPG that punched through his thigh and stayed there, live, instead of detonating.
An Army MEDEVAC crew that had been told they were picking up an injured child landed, saw the round still stuck in him, and voted to fly him anyway, even though hauling unexploded ordnance is against the rules.
They made the careful run to FOB Edinburgh, where the rest of the base was held back and Navy Lt. Cmdr. James Gennari kept Perez breathing while Army EOD Staff Sgt. Ben Summerfield pulled the rocket free. Perez stayed conscious through it.
When Perez was told what was in his leg, he said “Cool.” He survived.
