What a relief! Lula’s unexpected victory gives hope for the Amazon. He has dramatically cut felling, while Bolsonaro’s plans would doubtless have taken it past its tipping point, ensuring total eventual destruction with huge global consequences. euronews.com/2026/10/19/amaz…

The rewriting of 2016 needs challenging. āŒ The referendum ballot did NOT ask: ā€œShould Britain end freedom of movement?ā€ It asked whether Britain should remain in or leave the EU. Nothing about leaving the Single Market. Nothing about the customs union. Nothing about ending free movement. And during the referendum prominent Brexit campaigners openly cited Norway and Switzerland as models for Britain outside the EU. šŸ‡³šŸ‡“ Norway is in the Single Market and accepts free movement. The Leave coalition contained several completely different versions of Brexit. The public was never asked to choose between them. So it is simply not accurate to retrospectively turn 17.4 million Leave votes into 17.4 million votes specifically against free movement. That interpretation came afterwards. And if Britain is now deciding what relationship it wants with Europe, voters are perfectly entitled to decide again with the actual choices made explicit.
Replying to @Femi_sorry
7⃣ Nigel Farage passionately defended the idea that we could be like Norway, a Single Market country, in 2016.

Some good news for a change. It shows it can be done. Despite the wave of right wing populism, driven by divisive algorithms and bots on social media, the people united to defeat both Bolsonaro & Vučić.

The crazy thing is it never used to be like this. 20 years ago there was the Tote giant screen past the winning post PLUS another at the bend that used to be bigger. I understand that cost cutting measures are necessary, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of customer experience.
I hate to be negative again about this but I just can’t fathom how the biggest national hunt track in the country has this for the main tv screen. It’s nearly impossible to see the race clearly and spot your horse

You mean like doing a sketch for Yes, Prime Minister at the National Viewers' and Listeners' Association Awards? facebook.com/BBCArchive/vide… Or perhaps her appearance on Saturday Superstore? facebook.com/share/v/1A5NHh4…
When Thatcher was Prime Minister, she reportedly slept for 4 hours per night, worked up until 2am and didn’t like going on holidays. Fast forward 30+ years and our current Prime Minister has enough time to do a softball interview on LADbible and appear on Googlebox. Decline.

It has to get to a point where artists are more heavily involved in matters like ticket pricing and how much fans are being charged to watch their favourite artists or bands. Too many snouts in the trough, people don’t realise how little the talent is consulted or indeed earns.
Sam Fender speaks out over the prices of his latest tour, prices to be changed. Man of his word, massive respect. @samfendermusic #samfender #unitedkingdom #tour #price

The forced choice heads to heads give you perhaps the starkest picture of how Burnham outperforms Starmer right now. Starmer was less preferred than Davey or Badenoch and tied with Farage/Polanski. The shift of Burnham vs Polanski is particularly stark from 50-50 under Starmer to 80-20 for Burnham.

These are not the primary reasons why a Tote monopoly wouldn’t work in Britain, there are many cultural, economic, technological and legislative barriers that would need to be overcome way before compliance became an issue.
Ruby Walsh on how the Tote-based model cannot work in Britain & Ireland due to compliance rules šŸ—£ļø "Some people are obsessed with the idea that far away hills are greener, and some long for a Tote-based model. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always work either. It does in Hong Kong, the world's only growing Tote-based market, but its compliance rules differ. "Hong Kong residents have fewer opportunities to gamble, racing has less competition and it races only twice a week at two courses. France, by contrast, is under pressure. The PMU has a €45 million hole to plug and the French answer is effectively to close 24 courses in the coming years to balance the books. "Funding the bottom will be a major issue for racing; compliance and competition started the derailment, and taxation has just forced sharp business minds to look elsewhere"

Racing’s factional in-fighting costs another high profile executive their job. The revolving door at the top, losing good people in the process, cannot benefit the sport long term. A strategy needs to be built on consensus, through stability and continuity, not constant chaos.
Wilf Walsh will leave his role as Racecourse Association (RCA) chair on December 31 after resigning from the position Read more šŸ‘‡ šŸ“Ž - racingpost.com/news/industry…

Was the stunned silence at the end of NAZA's screening our discomfort at the soldier who readily confessed that Israel had committed a ā€œgenocideā€ in Gaza – and that from the outset his goal, and that of everyone he worked with, was to kill as many Palestinians as they could get away with. In his words, he personally used Israel’s military AI systems to oversee the killing of ā€œthousandsā€ of Palestinians. He called this period of his military career ā€œinsanely funā€. Another interviewee who was responsible for the mass-murder of Palestinians observed that, not only was he serving in Israel’s most prestigious intelligence unit, 8200, but that he had secured one of the unit’s most prized jobs. He noted how envious other officers were of his position in the automated killing machine. Was the stunned silence our revulsion at the fact that interviewee after interviewee rationalised their participation in the slaughter and maiming of many tens of thousands Gaza’s children with variations of the excuse ā€œI was just following ordersā€? One called himself a ā€œsmall cogā€ in the machinery of murder. Was the stunned silence our unease at the participant who noted that he had been raised to hate Germans because of the Holocaust, but then admitted that he was now struggling to see the difference between what the Nazis did and what he had done in Gaza? Was the stunned silence borne of audience recognition that AI’s frictionless, impersonal acts of surveillance, target selection and execution in Gaza are already being rolled out much closer to home? That clever, career-minded, obedient young people, just like the ones who engineered Israel’s AI system of absolute control, of inescapable surveillance, of unfeeling murder are designing the same automated system of judge, jury and executioner for us? What we see on the screen is the prototype for a new kind of AI-enhanced security state, one that will serve as a Pitiless Panopticon in which we are all prisoners. One where even the democratic pretence of rulers being accountable to the ruled collapses. This is an extract from my latest article NAZA is not just about Israel and Gaza. It’s about the evil lurking in us all. Find a link to the rest in the reply post below ā¬‡ļø

The dominance of certain trainers is clearly not just an issue limited to the UK & Ireland, but as @LydiaHislop warned I think we’ll see more of this, just as we have in the Irish Ces and Troytown. Not good for the game. racingpost.com/news/internat…

I’ve said it many times before but it bears repeating: populism = divisive. That is why politicians like Farage and Polanski will never get anywhere near office in the UK. It’s simply not how our party political system works. You have to build broad consensus.
