For anyone curious about what it actually looked like to kill a generation of functioning cars, here’s an actual video from 2009 and brief explanation:
The dealer first replaces the oil with sodium silicate solution. It’s a clear-ish liquid that crystallizes under extreme heat. As the engine warms up the solution begins to form small abrasive crystals in the oil system that shred the bearing and score the cylinder walls.
Within seconds of starting the car you can see smoke billowing from the exhaust, this is the crystals scratching the cylinder walls and leaving small grooves for oil and solution to leak past into the combustion chamber and ignite/evaporate, producing the white smoke.
Pretty soon the entire crankcase is full of crystals and freshly shredded metal flakes, the engine seizes. It took about 40 seconds in this video. Some engines reportedly lasted up to 7 minutes, but all were destroyed. That strikes me as sort of sad in a way, like watching a great warrior slowly lose a heroic last stand.
Now, this is the part that gets insanely wasteful. These cars were sent to federally approved recycling facilities where they had 180 days to sell the non-engine parts before they were required to prove that they had shred the entire thing into scrap steel.
But, in talking to a guy who ran one such facility at the time, he typically just sent them straight to the crusher. The timeframes allotted weren’t long enough to dismantle all of the cars, and even if you could, the marginal prices of the parts was greatly diminished. You cannot sell 1000 transmissions when only 50 went bad that year, they became worthless.
So just like that, in order to increase prosperity and save the environment, 677,000 entire running cars and trucks were turned directly into rebar worth a few cents per pound.
The entire Obama administration was like a chapter out of atlas shrugged.
Barack Obama was horrible in a million different ways, but he doesn’t get anywhere near the hate he deserves for destroying the used car market for an entire generation.
15-year-old cars with 150,000 miles that should be selling for $3,000 are going for $15,000. It’s abominable. Pure destruction and thievery.
A good framework for choosing how to act is: what if everyone acted this way?
If everyone acted like Ginger, **we wouldn't have to pay stupid cleaning fees and life would be more affordable and better for owners and renters**.
But if everyone says "screw it, I pay a fee," well, this is a race to the bottom. This attitude is an admission that the social contract is dead, and civilization is drawing to a close.
Final word on this, because the response to this simple act has been eye opening.
So many people responding here that I have somehow been duped, or am too stupid because I paid a cleaning fee, but also cleaned the dishes. They really don't get it.
1. I never pay an exorbitant cleaning fee. Any listing with a stupid fee, I scroll past.
2. Paying a cleaning fee does not (in my mind) absolve me of the responsibility to keep the spaces I inhabit clean and orderly. For my own dignity, I cannot leave a space I lived in, in a state of filth. It's just not who I am.
What's clear now, is that most people feel totally fine with buying themselves the right to live like animals.
Everybody wants nice things, but nobody wants to keep things nice.

i am coming to the conclusion that the reason that so many of these college students so rabidly hated charlie is not because of what he said when he was holding the mic but rather what he asked them to say when he handed the mic to them.
there's a stunning incoherence to their views. so angry, so confident, so entitled, and so completely, utterly unable to explain why or what they even believe.
never have so many known so little and yet felt so certain about so much.
there is no capacity for critical thinking or discourse, not even a basic semantic grasp of the concepts.
it's just an entitlement-flavored word salad spewed forth as some talismanic claim to deference and respect.
the greatest vulnerability of the marxist midwiped is being asked to explain what they are talking about.
ask what their magic words mean, why they use them, what they signify, how the problems and processes they posit work.
ask how they would do things.
ask what they are asking for.
the results are amazing.

Today: Starlink is essential to the defense of an invaded nation. Access to Starlink is a human right! Nationalize it!

See the clever trick here?
If you point out that the typical woman is not, in fact, smarter than the typical man, he will not engage with that idea. He will simply say that you had your feelings hurt about being dumb, and you should be treated like a woman.
This what @esrtweet calls a "kafkatrap". It's any argument that is constructed so that the very fact that you disagree looks like evidence that you are wrong.

You ignored the number one cause: religion. The USA was a strongly religious people with a massive family culture. Even during the Great Depression, families had many children.
To ignore this is to understand nothing.
I think this is right and it’s one of the strongest arguments for conceiving of woke as religion. When Christianity was dominant, you’d find people were more suspicious of the atheist than the thief, because the atheist is demonstrating that they’re spiritually confused right at the core of the matter.

Sins temporal vs sins spiritual. You could always choose to not commit a crime, not cheat, etc. -isms, though, ontologically evil.
That's the cleanest explanation I've come up with for it.

This fault line is going to determine American politics for the next 20 years.
Why? Boomers vote for young people before those young people existed to cover a $40T deficit for boomers.
If you're a boomer, you see that as "I am owed what I was promised". If you're a young person, you see that as "you guys promised yourselves you'd rip me off and I never agreed to this".
Mark my words, the parties will be forced to re-align around this question and take sides.
Keep your promises vs. no taxation without representation.
You're going to have to pick one, as a politician. And it's going to get really ugly.

Boomers overwhelmingly say in polls that young people should be taxed more to pay for their social security.
Social security is going bankrupt because it is a ponzi scheme misleadingly marketed to the missionary generation as if it were some sort of retirement account, and successively marketed to each generation through the boomers this way.
Just because a ponzi scheme goes broke doesn’t make the people caught with the bag entitled to sell it to the next generation of victims.
Hold the people who created it reputationally responsible and the people who perpetuated it financially responsible.
Blame congress for spending it away.
Blame the fed for backing up the right of banks to make money out of thin air.
If boomers want to tax young people to pay for it, a fair trade would be that we
a) tank the housing market by removing its artificial support (for example Fed could sell its mortgage-backed securities)
b) subsidize home loans for everyone under 30 so they can buy them on the cheap
c) put a property tax on homes bought with subsidized loans that is used to pay boomer social security
This would be especially fair because it wouldn’t artificially tank the housing market, it would just stop artificially propping it up; only boomers who own homes would be hurt but poor boomers would be unaffected; poor boomers would even have a chance to get a home on the cheap if they had good credit; and the extra taxes would only go on young people who took advantage of the subsidy.
However, inter-generational battles are a distraction from congress, the fed, the banks, and the regulatory state.
Boomers have much more wealth than younger generations and young people can’t afford to pay their bills.
That’s not because boomers made so much better choices than young people.
It’s because money printing and public debt steals from the future.
Each generation gets worse off as the bills of the past come due on those in the future.
Boomers got houses that the government artificially made massively increase in value. Young people are now priced out of the market.
The regulatory state and subsidized college loans let boomers become university presidents making corporate CEO salaries and gave admin jobs to lower-paid boomers while the cost of education went to the moon and young people got saddled with debt.
Boomers took a blind eye to what their rulers were doing just like the missionary generation, the lost generation, the greatest generation, and the silent generation before them, and just like generation X and millennials have done after them and Z and alpha are doing so far.
Blame the spenders and the printers — congress, the fed, and the banks — not the older or younger generations.
Sue the ponzi for damages, don’t pass it on to the next sucker.
Bind together against the people who screwed us and start with the spender and the printers.
A society that forgets that kids are *the point* has forgotten the face of its fathers.
Having children is more important then possibly all other items on the list.
It is extremely valuable for understanding of structuring a society and how financial decisions have a much greater effect on larger families. It also makes citizens desire to have a family and promotes that as a value for your country.
Additionally, It matures you so fast and for the first time in your life you start planning for your grandchildren's future rather then just your own. It makes you selfless and humbles you in more ways then you anticipate.
It puts your heart in the right place and if you allow people to vote who don't have kids it will promote the desires of a selfish person.
I think if your a caretaker of any other person it would suffice(parents, adopted kids, relatives, even friends, some modern women should count due to their mental handicap...). This type of law creates a culture that values family and caring for others. Every healthy society I've ever been to that has the happiest thriving communities have cultures that prioritize these things because they are extremely good for everyone.
