#RIP Patrick Stewart of Star Trek and X Men ...
On 12-4-1997, after getting a @PressClubDC coffee mug, he was asked, "Just from a purely logical point of view, why is it that a Captain whose name is Jean-Luc Picard have a perfect English accent?"

The thing about Mao Zedong was that he was not just a dictator. He was actually a f***ing idiot to such an extent that it would make Trump’s ridiculous claims of himself being a “stable genius” almost credible.
Mao forced farmers to make steel out of farm tools and in small village furnaces, which left farmers with no tools to work the fields. He forced farmers to chase away insect-eating sparrows, which led yo locust-infested fields. Millions starved to death as a result.
He thought that turning the population on itself in endless struggle was the path to proletariat prosperity - all it had done was to make more starve to death, loss of Chinese know-how across the board and China left on the brink of bankruptcy.
His views on dental hygiene were so off the planet that he eschewed both “modern” or more traditional Chinese modes of dental care, to the point that his doctors and others all mention the rotting stench that emanated from his mouth.
Not all dictators are idiots - Deng Xiaoping was a dictator but not an idiot. But Mao excelled himself in his idiotmaxxing, more a buffoonish Idi Amin than a dangerously bright Emperor Kangxi.

Fancy a Cambridge professor who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
China’s path to global significance actually started when Deng Xiaoping DITCHED Maoist policy settings by gradually dismantling collectivisation, encouraging private enterprise, easing political repression (1989 aside), and adopting a more Western-friendly attitude (which culminated in China joining the WTO under Deng’s successors, and that in turn gave China Western market access which set it on the path to economic strength). And while not even Xi completely reverted to Maoism, his partial reversal of Deng’s pro-market, pro-Western settings coincided with China’s current “Japan on steroids” unceasing economic doldrums.

“Steel output grew”
Omg
Lunacy.
It only grew because its citizens were melting their own pots and pans to desperately meet the State’s quotas. 🙄

You see that dip in global life expectancy in the 1950s?
That was caused by one man, Mao Zedong.
Mbappe should have apologised only for not being ruder about him.

A few readers have taken me to task for “missing the point of the film,” which is apparently that Elizabeth Holmes is unknowable and everything is ambiguous. Here’s my response: She went after Tyler Shultz and Erika Cheung with everything she had. I was threatened with litigation on a daily basis for months on end. It was a ruthless cover-up of a breathtaking fraud, and she was at the controls. Just a little context for those who have forgotten or didn’t follow the original story. By the way, I loved the film. #BestPicture, IMO.
A ton of people have asked me for my thoughts about “You Can See Everything,” the new Elizabeth Holmes documentary. Here they are: nytimes.com/2026/10/17/busin… via @NYTimes

Huge drop in Google searches for various health disinformation topics following the Ukrainian strikes on Russian data centers.
It makes you wonder how much of the “turbo cancer, ivermectin” nonsense is really fueled by Russian bots, & how many Americans they’ve killed…

"A 2020 meta-analysis of studies that actually reviewed consecutive hospital deaths (not the older “error rate × admissions” method) put preventable inpatient deaths at about 3.1%, or roughly 22,000 per year in the U.S. Restrict that to patients expected to live more than three months and the number drops to about 7,000."

Social media has worsened our collective science literacy skills.
For example, there are urine therapy groups on Facebook.
Similar alternative medicine groups provide a sense of community, but at the cost of promoting pseudoscientific beliefs that compromise health.

It's the last day of the @AllisonInquiry and we're told Ms. Overholt, who last appeared before the Ohio HHC in 2021, will appear to demonstrate non-ferrous magnetism.
Source reports that Ms. Overholt has not bathed in 3 days to ensure THIS demo is a success.

I could not disagree more. Those are not “gaping holes” left because New York was too weak or incompetent to rebuild. They are the actual footprints of the Twin Towers, deliberately kept open as hallowed ground.
We understand this instinct elsewhere. We did not raise the USS Arizona from Pearl Harbor, polish away the scars, and pretend nothing happened. Some places are allowed to bear witness.
The World Trade Center was rebuilt. But where thousands of human beings entered those towers one morning and never came home, we chose something different: absence itself.
The water falls into a void that can never be filled. The names of the dead surround it. You stand where the towers stood and confront what was taken from us.
That is not weakness. That is remembrance.
Can I just say… I despise this. Just two open wounds in downtown Manhattan that we failed to rebuild.
We could’ve built a beautiful 9/11 memorial and still built back the twin towers bigger and better than before. Instead we have these gaping holes, a monument to the weakness and incompetence of the people running NYC.
Honor the victims and REBUILD.

3,000 people were murdered on 9/11
Not died, not passed away, not caught up in violence
Murdered
Deliberately, premeditatively targeted and murdered
That's fundamental to understanding what happened that day
Don't dilute the horror and the evil of it

In 2023 Bin Laden's poisonous "Letter to America" went viral on TikTok and had American teenagers, who were not even born on 9/11, saying things like "wow that guy actually talks sense"
We are failing to educate the next generation about what 9/11 was
