🛢️ Tanker captains are being paid the equivalent of $100,000 a month, plus a $50,000 bonus per trip, to sail through the Strait of Hormuz, the Financial Times reported, as shipowners push to keep Gulf crude moving despite Iranian attacks striking 2% of all vessels in the third quarter of the year.
Ordinary sailors, who can start at $1,500 a month, earn at least four to six times their usual rate for each transit. Most come from poorer communities in the Philippines, India and Indonesia, as well as Russia, Ukraine and eastern Europe.
Some crew are being pressured rather than paid. Manoj Yadav of the Forward Seamen's Union of India told the FT that owners threaten to replace sailors who refuse, and deduct the cost of sending them home from their wages. "If they won't agree, they may lose their job. If they agree, they may lose their life," he said.
At least 93 ships have been hit and 24 sailors killed since February 28, according to the International Maritime Organization.

#WATCH | Mumbai, Maharashtra: Forward Seamen's Union of India (FSUI) General Secretary Manoj Yadav says, "... on the 20th, two vessels, MT Sebu-1 and MV Lutuf, were reportedly hijacked in Yemeni waters by Somali pirates, with around 22 Indian nationals on board. In their last communication with their families, they said the vessels were being taken towards Somalia, the captain had been badly assaulted, and the crew were being held together with their phones taken away. This is not the first such incident. Similar incidents occurred in April, and some people are still being held hostage. We have repeatedly lost Indian citizens in international waters over the past six months. The government must take strong and immediate action to bring them back safely..."

FSUI Urges PM Modi to Deploy Indian Navy for Protection of Indian Seafarers in Black Sea and Red Sea @FSUIINDIA
@FsuiManoj
New Delhi, August 6: In the wake of escalating attacks on merchant vessels in conflict-hit waters, the Forward Seamen's Union of India (FSUI) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the immediate deployment of Indian Navy assets to safeguard Indian seafarers and Indian-flagged vessels operating in the Black Sea and Red Sea.
In a letter dated 5 August 2026, signed by General Secretary Manoj Yadav, the union expressed grave concern over the worsening security situation caused by the Russia-Ukraine war and tensions in the Middle East. The letter states that commercial shipping routes have become "active danger zones" due to repeated missile and drone attacks on merchant vessels.
FSUI highlighted the recent attack on the Indian-flagged MSV Faize Noore Oliya, carrying 13 Indian crew members, while transiting the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait on 4 August 2026. The union said the incident underscores the growing risks faced by Indian seafarers in one of the world's busiest maritime chokepoints.
The union appealed to the Government of India to deploy maximum possible naval assets to protect Indian-flagged vessels and ships carrying Indian seafarers in high-risk regions, particularly the Black Sea, Red Sea, and Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, until the prevailing conflicts are resolved.
FSUI also noted that despite advisories already issued by the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the deteriorating security environment requires stronger operational protection to ensure the safety of Indian maritime professionals.
Calling for urgent intervention, the union emphasized that Indian seafarers continue to play a vital role in global trade under extremely hazardous conditions and deserve enhanced protection from the Government of India. – at Delhi, India

Families have also turned their anger towards the Indian government. Bhargavi said the government’s response had not been adequate and argued that a stronger response after the first incident might have prevented subsequent attacks.
The seafarers’ union has demanded that the Indian government approach the United Nations against all member states responsible for attacks that killed Indian seafarers and seek $5 million in compensation.

#WATCH | Delhi: Relatives of Indian seafarers killed in the West Asia maritime conflict demand swift justice, stringent safety protocols, and financial compensation.
Father of Aditya Sharma, who was killed on MT Settebello, Rajesh Sharma, says, "...Aditya was our only child and the pain of losing our only child cannot be explained in words. So, we demand that whoever has killed him must be punished as per the law. But I have seen that no efforts have been made by the Govt of India... In the beginning, people were coming to our home: MLAs, MPs from Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, ministers. Even Anurag Thakur came to our house and assured us that a fair inquiry will be conducted, and we will give you all the details, and we will hold whoever accountable; even if it is a company or a country... From the Indian Govt, there was no condemnation... 80% of India's import-export trade is handled by these foreign ships. India has a very small fleet of ships... the govt must take strong action against those who have committed these crimes, whether it is a country or a company. We need answers, need justice, and compensation also..."
#WATCH | Delhi: Father-in-law of Heramb Karmarkar, who was killed on MV Galaxy, Rishi Tandon, says, "...On Sunday, we got the news that he was missing, and on Tuesday evening, we came to know that he is no more... First of all, his ship was not in Hormuz when they were hit. They were in Oman waters when the missile hit... For the last 3-4 years, he has been working on the ship. He was supposed to sign off on the 15th of July, and probably in 15-20 days he would have been home. Govt has to take very strict actions because Indians are being killed almost every day now. For the last one week, every day something or the other, Indians are dying, and the government is just condemning... What difference does it make to the US, Iran, Russia, Ukraine? It doesn't make any difference to them... It is an act of war if an Indian is being killed without any reason. If after the Pahalgam attack, Operation Sindoor can happen, it has to be done again because of this. India takes it very easily that their people are dying, and we are condemning. I'm not happy with that at all. Only condemning doesn't work in today's world."
#WATCH | Delhi: Former Rajya Sabha member of CPI, Elamaram Kareem, says, "First demand is that the Govt of India has to take a strong step to safeguard the lives of the seafarers. There are international agencies; the UNO and other agencies are there. To coordinate with those agencies, only the Govt of India can do it. Several shipping companies are there, and they are not showing responsibility. Around 3.5 lakh seafarers are from India. Not only in the Iran-US conflict, but also in other conflicts, ships are attacked... The lives of the seafarers are very critical. Now the family members are here. They are not getting sufficient compensation even after the incident. Much time has been taken to get information and a response from the government. Director General of Shipping and the concerned officers have also not responded. The Seafarers Union are actively involved in all this... But even they are not getting correct information in a timely manner. This is the attitude of the government, govt agencies, and govt offices. That is why we are compelled to expose this through you... We have not put any specific demand. But there should be an international protocol, as was done when it happened to an American seafarer or a European seafarer... they are giving sufficient compensation. But Indian seafarers are not getting such reasonable and sufficient compensation. Their families are orphaned."
#WATCH | Delhi: Rajya Sabha member of CPI-M, P Sivadasan says, "The members of their (victim seafearers) family are here with grief and hurt. They lost their family members...With this painful mind, they addressed media persons. The Govt of India is not ready to understand the real issue which seafarers are facing now. We all know the international protocols, but the Govt of India is not following them. Here, more than 15 citizens of our nation have lost their lives. But they are not getting proper help or assistance from the Govt. The value of a human being cannot be compared to money... So here, the duty of the Govt is to determine to what extent they should protect the lives of Indian citizens wherever they are. When international geopolitical issues arose, the seafarers faced the threat... They need protection... But here, the Govt of India has not raised its voice against such incidents... the Govt should protect the lives of seafarers and should also ensure sufficient compensation. This is our demand..."
