The real issue isnβt that we donβt have enough teachers - itβs that too many qualified teachers have been driven out of the classroom.
To make teaching a job that is compatible with family life again, we must:
- Tackle unsustainable workload: driven by large class sizes, high levels of pupil need, inadequate resources, and too few support staff. FUND EDUCATION
- End the regime of fear: scrap Ofstedβs punitive inspection system that inflates workloads. Halt the Nandos score card.
- Build in flexibility: guarantee at least 20% PPA time (with the option to take it from home), and allow staggered starts.
- Recognise teaching as a gendered profession: every school should have robust policies covering maternity, menopause, and conditions such as endometriosis.
- Raise pay: salaries must be competitive with other graduate professions.

"Jessica achieved better results in Maths, Art, PE and Media than she did in History - Why is that?"
Because they are very different subjects to History. She prefers and is better at those subjects.
"John achieved less in your subject than he did in English, why is that?"
Because John was taken out of 50% of the lessons by learning support for extra interventions... in English.
"Why is this class residual lower?"
Because I asked for support on behaviour all year and got absolutely nothing apart from platitudes and closed office doors.
"Ok, what about Alex?"
Alex was 30 minutes late for school most days and I teach the GCSE groups twice period 1.
"These are excuses not reasons"
Oh, I haven't even started on the environmental and hereditary factors that play a key part in exam outcomes for all students.
"We only care about driving up standards! No excuses!"

New βWhy do we need teachers when we have Google?β variant spotted in the wild.
We donβt teach kids about grammar and mitochondria and trig because weβre hedging our bets they want to become poets, biologists or coders; we teach them a foundation of human knowledge so they can make sense of, and navigate through, their lives, and the world. And so theyβre exposed to a million possible futures.
Imagine your refrigerator breaks. Precisely zero people in this situation would think,
"Gee, I'm so glad that 11 years ago when we bought this thing, that I read the instruction manual cover to cover, for such a time as this!"
No. Nobody does this. And yet this is how the school system operates.
I call it the "just in case" education model. Just in case you become a marine biologist, we need you, Mr. 8-year-old, to memorize that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.
Just in case you become a rocket scientists, we need you to memorize the quadratic equation.
Just in case you ever end up on Jeopardy!, memorize all these historical factoids that aren't relevant to your life right now.
It's insane, and insanely normalized. But the "just in case" model isn't how humans learn. You don't read the refrigerator manual at purchase time just in case you need the info later.
No βΒ "just in time" for when you need to fix it, you grab it and find the information you need. Or you pull up a YouTube video or call your handyman uncle to help.
This is how we as humans learn and act. When we need info, we find it, use it, and move on. We don't fill our minds with encyclopedic knowledge just in case we might ever need it.
Especially with the advent of AI, it becomes pointless to fill every child's mind with the same information just in case they ever need it.
Far better to equip them with research skills and critical thinking tools that can help them acquire whatever info they might need in the future in real time.
The school system is broken. Your child's mind doesn't need to be.

Marking
This is the biggest waste of time in education. It takes *hours*. There is no evidence that taking up science or history exercise books every couple of weeks, ticking and flicking, writing a couple of things in the margin and two or three points at the end does anything at all. Neither is there much evidence for this approach to marking essays. And yet, so many schools seem invested in it to the point that leaders spend much of their time policing it.
I think the practice stems from two sources. The first is confusing marking with feedback. Feedback can be in the moment. It can be a teacherβs response to whatβs on a mini whiteboard. In fact, thatβs going to have a bigger impact than marking because it is more likely to be received and acted on, whereas comments in books can be ignored. And thatβs not an excuse to make the situation worse by insisting that kids have to respond to the comments and then teachers have to respond to thatβwhich is madness.
The second source is tradition and a fear of parents who expect the marking.
But imagine a football coach who asks their inexperience players to play a game of football. Itβs full of mistakes and even misunderstandings of the rules but the coach says nothing. Then, at the end, the coach writes each player a short note on how to improve for next time that the players may not even read.
Thatβs marking.

*Daily Tip*
These first few weeks you will have started to establish some clear routines with your pupils. Now comes maintenance time. Reinforce with specific praise & when pupils forget, ask "what should you be doing now?" to give them a nudge or chance for you to remind them.

Books do not all have to be literary masterpieces with life-changing themes in order to be considered valid. Books that are purely for entertainment and comfort purposes are valid, too. Just because a book is meant to be read for fun doesn't make it any lesser than.
