LANDMARK JUDGEMENT ON THE AMANYANABO OF KALABARI TITTLE
The landmark customary law dispute of Samuel Will Braide v. J.T. Princewill (Suit No. P/27/1957) is a foundational judicial authority regarding traditional leadership, city-state autonomy, and the nature of the monarchy within the Kalabari Kingdom of Rivers State, Nigeria.
๐ Facts of the Case
โข The Historic Dispersal: Following succession disputes and civil unrest in the ancient capital of Elem Kalabari between 1881 and 1884, the Kalabari people split into three main independent settlements: Buguma, Abonnema, and Bakana.
โข The Agitation for Regional Title: In the decades following the split, Chief J.T. Princewill, the reigning Amayanabo of Buguma, sought to officially elevate and expand his title from "Amayanabo of Buguma" to the overarching title of "Amayanabo of Kalabari".
โข The Legal Challenge: This centralized assertion was fiercely challenged in 1957 by Chief Samuel Will Braide of Bakana, who represented the ancient Elem Kalabari lineages and the autonomous interests of the sister communities.
โข The Core Argument: Chief Braide argued that the individual towns maintained localized autonomy and that the Buguma monarch could not unilaterally claim supreme customary sovereignty over the entire Kalabari ethnic nationality.
โ Judicial Questions (Issues for Determination)
1. Unilateral Alteration: Whether the reigning Amayanabo of Buguma had the traditional right under customary law to unilaterally change his title to "Amayanabo of Kalabari" and assume regional supremacy.
2. Sovereign Monopoly: Whether the title of "Amayanabo of Kalabari" was an exclusive monopoly vested in the Abbi/Amachree house of Buguma, or a collective heritage shared across the decentralized Kalabari city-states.
โ๏ธ Judgment of the Court
โข Injunction Granted: The court ruled completely in favor of the plaintiff, Chief Samuel Will Braide.
โข Restraint Issued: The court issued a perpetual injunction strictly ordering Chief J.T. Princewill never to refer to himself, parade himself, or hold himself out as the Amayanabo of Kalabari.
โข Dismissal of Appeals: Chief Princewill subsequently appealed the decision up to the Supreme Court, where his appeals failed and the baseline high court ruling was upheld.
Ratio Decidendi (Reasoning for the Decision)
โข Autonomy of City-States: The court recognized that the structural evolution of the Kalabari kingdom post-dispersal established sovereign, co-equal status among the principal settlements of Buguma, Abonnema, and Bakana.
โข Customary Limitations: An individual traditional ruler cannot single-handedly alter traditional titles to expand territory or exercise geopolitical dominance over historically autonomous sister communities without absolute collective consensus.
โข Stool Legitimacy: The status of an Amayanabo is bound to a specific localized stool; a localized stool (Buguma) cannot be stretched automatically to assert sovereign authority over an entire national territory (Kalabari) in a fractured monarchy
Occupying LGAs doesn't equate to population.
There's a reason why Wike kept hold of Obio/Akpor, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, and Port Harcourt LGAs for PDP during the fight with his boy.
The votes of those three LGAs alone is enough to win an election for any person in Rivers State

Every day, thereโs a new Luka stat or advanced metric proving just how dumb some people are. People like Max Kellerman, Stephen A., and Michael Wilbon hate Luka so much that theyโre willing to make complete idiots of themselves just to justify their hate.
For what it's worth, the Lakers have had the third-best transition defense in the league so far this season.
On top of that, it's been the best transition defense Luka has ever been a part of (on-court possessions), both in terms of PPP allowed and the fewest % of possessions where the other team has a man advantage.
Whether this is more effort from Luka getting back, better insulation from the rest of the roster, or just randomness remains to be seen. That said, it hasn't been an issue for the Lakers so far.
