How does a cartoonist choose what to include in a panel and what to leave out? How do they decide when to zoom in on a subject and when to pull back? Jesse Hamm answers these questions in today’s Carousel 032: Cropping Panels! bit.ly/3dBUG34

This has been a hindrance to me in learning how to draw and @Hamm_Tips explains it beautifully. comic-con.org/toucan/carouse…

Artists are often advised to “draw what you see, not what you think you see.” But how do we distinguish between those options? This month’s Carousel column explains the difference! bit.ly/3cCx9NE

European comics and art comics are common exceptions because they feature larger blocks of text, whereas American superhero comics tend to feature dialogue in shorter bursts.

Mixed case works great where there are large blocks of text (like in a novel), because it helps differentiate letters as you flow along at high speed.
In smaller blocks of text (as in signage or speech balloons), mixed case feels redundant, like a spoiler on a postal truck.

I went to recommend some artists for a project recently and had to cross three people off my list because I couldn’t find examples of their work. On the INTERNET.

One of the great essayists about the art and craft of comic book drawing and storytelling is @jesse_hamm. I may be biased. Check out his Patreon: patreon.com/jessehamm @HelioscopePDX
Jesse Hamm celebrates the art of iconic cartoonist and comics artist Mort Drucker, who died last week at the age of 91. In his 55 years at MAD magazine, Drucker set the standard for caricature art. He was a recipient of Comic-Con's Inkpot Award in 1996. bit.ly/3adhm4o

Now I'm rereading @Hamm_Tips' pieces on Alex Toth, & he uses Guernica as one of the fine art examples of this in the essay on Toth's melding of cartoony & realistic art styles. Hamm's is some of the best writing about #comicstheory I've ever come across. I recommend his Patreon.

@Hamm_Tips What I Want For Christmas is a printed edition of @jesse_hamm's tips about cartooning. That hypothetical book can't come out soon enough, if you ask me.

The Mariah Carey Christmas ornament someone tweeted is pretty funny, but it demonstrates a common mistake artists make when drawing features that are partially obscured. We're tempted to SQUEEZE the cropped features into view (1), instead of letting them hide where they are (2).
